  1. The publisher is a new co-operative made up of Sheffield residents. The crowdfunder is to raise money for the Carpenter book, and then to republish other books by Sheffield authors that are no longer available or out of print! A worthy cause. Carpenter was one of Sheffield's great characters!
  2. Hi There! I'm currently leading a crowdfunder to print a high quality new edition of Sheffield radical Edward Carpenter's 1883 poem Towards Democracy, to celebrate Carpenter's 175th birthday. Though Carpenter is fondly remembered, it is hard to come by good quality editions of his work on the high street. None of his work for example, is available to purchase at Waterstone's even in Sheffield! You can however buy a copy of Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman, who inspired Carpenter to write Towards Democracy. I'd be grateful if you'd consider pledging to the campaign. You can also follow the us on Twitter! https://twitter.com/MillthorpePress
  3. They are working on an application. Of course, in this instance the asset is owned by the council, so its hard to see why they would agree to putting a six month restraining order on themselves
  4. The Friends of Birley Spa are currently working flat out to try and save the Birley Spa Bath House from being sold at auction in September. This historic building has been neglected for many years, and due to the councils need to find money to fill the hole in the budget due to government cuts, they have decided to sell. As well as lobbying the council to suspend or delay the sale, they have started a crowdfunder to raise money to fund a possible community purchase/takeover. So far the council has refused to budge, but Clive Betts MP is trying to persuade them to change their minds. You can donate a minimum of £10 in exchange for membership and a vote in a future cooperatively owned Birley Spa here: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/birleyspa

  8. No wealth is created, it is merely transfered from one perception to another.
  9. But surely then the problem never changes? If a few people resign, there is a long queue of people who will want the job regardless of the conditions. A year later, they will also leave when they get fed up. Only through co-ordinated action can things be changed. Has everyone forgot the notion of progress? Is it not our right for ALL to have a good job with good conditions. Regardless of the pay, I wouldnt be a bus driver in Sheffield.
  10. It was a western capitalist consensus. Many of the largest economies i.e Australia, the USA, did the same thing. If Labour had put in place strict regulation, the Conservatives (who by the way, called for less regulation right up until the crash) would have gone after them as 'stifling' private investment, stamping on peoples desires etc etc
  11. So what happens if the mother gets pregnant again? Force her to have an abortion? What happens if she has a second child? Refuse it benefit that it surely needs, and force it to live in poverty, because its parents were irresponsible?
  12. No that was never agreed. Bernard Wetherill was a Tory speaker during Thatchers years. It was more a convention that they took turns.
  13. Most of the decisions are made by the unelected European Commission.
