  1. Yeah..the Commanders lived about 4 doors on from us in Deerlands Avenue..Sylvia was same age as me and also in the same class at Lindsay Rd.
  2. I was in Mr Stables class at that time and I remember almost all the above names ...however I must admit to being slightly miffed that no one mentioned MY name. I was sat next to Janet Hobson ...any guesses?. No..? Thought not....my name was Brian Cowling.
  3. I was an apprentice in the machine shop from 1965 to 69. My name is Brian Cowling...ring any bells? ( milling section ) Our training officer was George Cooper . He was a goody-goody type.. gave a tenth of his earnings to his church if that helps..He was a nice man. His brother Alf worked there also but was a polar opposite of George. He was made up to shop foreman just before I left and was quite strict. Must have gone to his head. He used to stand at the end of all the machines at 5 minutes to finishing time to make sure nobody washed off early. Other names I remember were Jack Hardy ( tool stores boss ) who died before I left. John Hazard...charge hand. Phillip Berger and Kenneth Cook ( two apprentices set on same time as me.) Byron Watson (machinist and shop steward) . I named my first son after him. A guy called Ted..highly skilled bloke .worked on the milling section also...his second name will come to me after I post this.... ( just remembered..Ted Belk ) When I got to about 20 or 21 I left for a job with more money..to Ashow Engineering. .who paid most in Sheffield at the time Over all I have fond memories of Edward Pryor and Sons. ---------- Post added 22-09-2017 at 20:23 ---------- What was you name? I was there at this time. .
  4. Go for fibre...it can't be that much more...you know it makes sense. Especially if you've got a smart TV and watch BBC Iplayer, catch-up, Youtube etc.
  5. I have one for £20 similar to those above, I leave it plugged into cigarette socket so it starts filming when I turn ignition key and turns itself off when I stop the car. I have an SD card inserted and it films until full then overwrites the earliest stuff. It is adequate for maybe an accident but the video quality is not too good. Has trouble reading number plates unless right up behind the car in front ---------- Post added 24-11-2013 at 00:04 ---------- Yeah, that's mine......I paid £20 for it though off my son....the cheeky sod...
  6. I reckon people will give various speeds depending on how far away they are from the green cabinet. Fibre will go at lightning speed to the cabinet but then will have to travel down old fashioned copper wires to the houses. I get mine Monday and our cabinet is near the bottom of our garden so I am looking forward to something like 70 meg.... not to say that I will get that from day one ( or ever even ) because I think they have to do some testing and calibrating on it for the first week or so to get the optimum speed. As for Talktalk my brother and one of mates are with them and they reckon they are OK. So I decided to give them a try. If you search " Talktalk community" on Google you will find lots of negative stuff but I reckon if its a crap service I can live with it for 18 months because I've only been on 2 meg with Sky.
  7. On my laptop there's a little sliding switch on the side that I am always catching and turning off my wifi. I am not saying this is what's happening in your case, you are probably not as daft as me. ---------- Post added 22-11-2013 at 21:24 ---------- However, I just remembered, I had a similar problem with my main computer. It said I was connected to the network (router) but I had no internet access. I cured this by going into the device manager and deleting the network card (adapter). I then rebooted my machine and Windows discovered my card again and reset it somehow and then it worked OK. If it were me I would try doing that with your laptop then you can buy me a pint if it works.
  8. I would have had it too from Virgin but it's not cabled round here. After being on 2 meg from Sky I've been waiting years for fibre and now its here. Reminding me of when I waited for over half a century to see a total eclipse in England only for it to be cloudy and we were stood facing the wrong direction.
  9. We will see how good a service Talktalk provide over the coming months then. There's a lot of negative stuff on their forums but I suppose a satisfied customer would not feel a need to post. So maybe its giving a false impression of the company.
  10. Lol...its not the backwoods . But Ive heard a rumour they are getting the wheel in Barnsley soon.
  11. I have received mixed reviews about Talktalk. The minuses currently out balance the plus. Apparently Open reach supply their own modem and Talktalk send you a router to plug into this. But, good news, I rang complaints up again today and they said an engineer is gonna come out again next Monday.. So I am keeping my fingers crossed. I also checked by entering my post code that Fibre is, in fact, available in my area. ---------- Post added 21-11-2013 at 13:17 ---------- I think Sky supply a combined router and modem all in one box.
  12. Here in Brinsworth I ordered fibre from Talktalk after seeing it advertised on their site that it was available in my area. I was supposed to "Go Live" last Monday but the BtOpenreach engineer fiddled with the box outside and my master socket before telling me my modem was " missing". He said a Talktalk engineer would bring it later...then went. After many calls to Asia and being told different stories I have come to the conclusion that the real situation is that Talktalk fibre is NOT ready yet and the engineer never intended bringing me out a modem at all. All he was directed to do by Talktalk was to wire me up ready. And then make up excuses. I suspect Talktalk are miss-selling fibre knowing full well they are unable to provide it yet. I might be wrong about this but they say someone will eventually fit the modem but have given me no definite date or time. Now its looking like I have overshot my cooling off time whereby I could have easily cancelled the order. I still believe I am entitled to, however, since the service I am getting is not as advertised. I am managing to get 2meg wired up as ADSL. Can anyone put my mind at rest ? Is anyone getting fibre in Brinsworth or thereabouts ? At the moment I feel like I have been done up like a kipper.
  13. Or, alternatively, step 5... it may end with some spoil-sport coming on pointing out all the threads frailties and putting an end to some enjoyable, light-hearted banter that this thread has inspired.... Amen.
  14. Lets not venture down that stupid chemtrail road again ---------- Post added 08-10-2013 at 19:47 ---------- Just when I was warming to you.
  15. You're not going to invoke a reply from me.........oooops
