  1. If the space you're playing the music in isn't acoustically treated/is completely unsuitable and working against you then it might not make much difference if you're playing FLAC/WAV or mp3 files. I'm no expert on this. I read an article the other day that you might be interested in: https://www.residentadvisor.net/features/1588 Sitting in front of some fairly low cost speakers at home I can still tell the difference between the formats; I've DJed in some spaces where the acoustics were terrible (sounds bouncing back etc) and I don't think it would have been worth spending extra on FLAC files
  2. I worked for free for 100s of hours to make Signals @ Tramlines (the electronic music event at Yellow Arch last year) happen, and spent a lot of my own money that I'll never see back. The festival isn't making money, and costs a lot to put on; people moaned about buying programmes last year (which wasn't a compulsory purchase) and that was disheartening to see. I think people need to see this event as something worth supporting, maybe through a small donation, and if not they need to come up with a way to keep it free rather than just sitting back complaining that it isn't free. Like other people have said, this sort of thing isn't free elsewhere.
  3. Signals fundraiser Friday 30th November The Harley So the dust has finally settled and each of our respective promotional muscles have relaxed after the brilliant madness which was our first event as part of Tramlines 2012 (with Objekt, DMX Krew, The Black Dog, snd, Demdike Stare and many more), another belated thanks to all that came down, it was really special. However, in line with the music we try and promote, progression is the name of the game so we're all buzzing about what's to come. With some plans for another huge show in the pipeline we've thrown together a line-up of people we respect from the extended Signals family, all in aid of funding Signals so that we can keep providing you with more quality events. A night filled with auditory and visual wonders is guaranteed: Mat Steel (snd - DJ Set) Bozzwell (Clouded Vision/Nang/Throne of Blood) Jack Opus (Bunga Bunga) Christopher Rave (Live Roland hardware show) Sheffield Techno Institute DJs Box Jam DJs Thirsty Ear DJs Bat Makumba DJs Zxodiac Visuals by Eyeforreal Entry is free b4 11.30pm, £3 after / The Harley / 21:00-04:00
  4. BOX JAMS #13 Friday 9th November at Harrisons 1854 Bar (just off West St on Regents Terrace) 9pm til 12.30am Having just about recovered from our debauched 1st birthday bash (big thanks to DJ Pipes, STI and Ed Horsley) we're just about in a state to get number 13 underway. We Djed at Sheffield Techno Institute's Yellow Arch party after Poly Darton, and although we hadn't planned to have any guests for this one, after hearing his set we had to get him along for a rinse-out. Expect the usual real electro, cosmic, house and leftfield vibes, from Detroit to the Hague and all points inbetween... Pre-club hours (9pm til 12.30am-ish), courtyard out back, classic videogame/Detroit dance-off footage projected in the bar, absinthe/decent spirits/world beers on sale, nice bar staff, in a generally idiot-free environment hidden just off West St. Requests on the wall if there's anything you'd like to hear. Tax: free all night Residents Patrick RD & Juliun c90, playing stuff like this: Clone, Viewlexx, Trax, Tirk, Warp, Creme Organization. Claude Young, Larry Heard, QX-1, Maurice Fulton/Syclops/Boof, Prince, I-F, Der Zyklus, Dopplereffekt, Drexciya, Daniel Wang, Armando, Dexter, Robert Hood/M-Plant, Metro Area, Mike Agent X Clark, Jamal Moss/Hieroglyphic Being, L.I.E.S., Aux 88, Detroit in Effect, Kraftwerk, Chris & Cosey, Patrick Adams, International Feel, LFO, Moodymann, Eskimo, Trouble Funk, DMX Krew, Todd Terje, Move D, Workshop, Cybotron, Detroit Grand Pubahs, Optic Nerve, Mark E, Green Velvet, Afrika Bambaataa, Actress, Legowelt, Kompakt, Theo Parrish, Man Parrish, Moroder, Autechre, Lory D, Street Sounds, June, John Carpenter, Unit Moebius, Throne of Blood, Mr De', Margaret Dygas, Phuture/Pierre's Pfantasy Club, Duplex, Bangkok Impact, Dynamix II, Mathematics, Grace Jones
  5. 1. That's too much of a generalisation, and assumes that geography is the deciding factor in how well informed a person is. Probably not the case these days, we've moved on a bit from pigeon post. 2. Romney has said some things that clearly show what an unsophisticated thinker he is, so if people haven't put his lesser-known policies under the microscope, I'd say that's a prudent way to prioritise their time. If you can see that a 9-month-old baby can't make their own breakfast, it's pretty safe to assume they can't play the piano
  6. I honestly despair at some of the responses to this
  7. A fairly depressing article here (one of many today) explaining how Starbucks have paid no tax at all in the UK since 2009, and only £8m in the 14 years they've been in the UK, despite sales of 3 billion. Disgraceful given the state the country's in - think I'd rather spend my money elsewhere, and hope that people will show them the error of their ways by boycotting them http://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/news/good-bean-counters-starbucks-has-paid-no-tax-in-uk-since-2009-8212579.html
  8. If you're using a laptop only you may need an external soundcard (lots of info online on why you might need one if you google it - basically it means you can cue up the next track while the other one is playing, if your laptop doesn't have 2 stereo audio outputs). You'll need to know the basics of how a dj mixer works too if you don't already (they're pretty simple, don't push it into the red being one of the golden rules). You plug the laptop into that. If you ask someone about putting on a dj night and you've never used a mixer it'll set alarm bells ringing. If you don't know how a soundsystem (mixer, amp, speakers etc) fits together you're best finding a bar where it's all set up and ready to go, with someone knowledgeable on hand for if there are problems. If you or someone you know can do that side of things it's a plus. Not all songs are recorded at the same volume, so you will have to make sure the next tune is the same volume as the last in your software, if it doesn't do it automatically. If your laptop is reliable you'll generally be ok, but I'd advise having a back-up plan for if it starts playing up (cds if they have cdjs, or an ipod plugged into one of the other mixer channels - though that's a last resort really), especially if you're the only dj playing.
  9. Hi, have put on nights for 9/10 years here, best thing to do is go and ask venues if they're interested, although if you don't have your own decks/mixer/pa etc you'll need to find places that have those things already. If you have decks/cdjs you've got more choice, and if you have/can borrow a pa even more so. Knowing your way around a mixer/decks/whatever you're using is a must. Places that have a lot of business already will be a bit harder to get slots at than small bars that aren't doing so well, but it's worth asking anywhere, you can only get knocked back, and there aren't that many bars in town - there'll be a few places not worth asking but common sense should tell you where those will be. You probably won't get into one of the big bars straight off but if you do well you can build things up, and bars will always be interested in people who can make them money (as long as it fits into their aesthetic). Places off the main drag will also be easier to convince, but usually because they're harder to attract people to. If you want paying, or even if you just want them to pay for your posters/beer for the night you'll have to convince them that it won't be money down the drain - having a crowd of friends who'll come and increase their takings definitely helps, as well as having a good idea of how you'll promote it. Lot of nights put up 4 posters and don't do much work at all (which is ok if you know a lot of mates who'll come, less so if you don't) and wonder why it's empty all night. Small bars that aren't doing well will have a tighter grip on the purse strings, but the pressure will be less on you. I know people who've agreed a percentage of the takings as payment, eg if the bar is usually dead but you pack it out you get some of the profits - up for negotiation. The main thing to keep in mind is that you get out of it what you put into it, if you're lucky - grafting hard isn't a surefire way to make something a success, but not grafting enough is a surefire way to do badly. Your reasons for doing it seem like the right ones anyway, best of luck!
  10. BOX JAMS #12 1st Birthday Bash w/ DJ Pipes Friday 12th October at Harrisons 1854 Bar Number 12, and it's our first birthday...the initial aim of Box Jams was to play the kind of music we weren't hearing around Sheffield: from proper electro/Detroit/Chicago/Hague/go-go/disco/Warp classics to more leftfield new releases (without getting thrown out). Surprisingly, our expectations of playing to two Legowelt fans and the bar man have been slightly exceeded: in the last year we've had full dancefloor finishes (at 12.30am), and been asked to DJ at many fine Sheffield nights, plus on line-ups alongside DJ Stingray, The Forgemasters, The Black Dog, snd, Oris Jay (at eSC), Alunageorge, Becoming Real, Demdike Stare and a load of others. Thanks to everyone who's come down or put us on, we appreciate it Kabal plotter and agitator extraordinaire DJ Pipes played an incredible set for us at #8 back in May, dropping everything from DJ Parrot's Crooked Man project to Bela Lugosi's Dead, so we had to get him back down for this special session; he's been biding his time between then and now with a few bits and bobs, from kick-starting the Boiler Room Sheffield take-over to reworking Toddla T's Watch Me Dance album with Ross Orton for Ninja Tunes. Expect to again hear another side to his record collection, with plenty of gems from the vaults and strictly no mp3s... The bar session is pre-club hours (9pm til 12.30am-ish), heated courtyard out back, classic videogame/Detroit dance-off footage projected in the bar, decent spirits/world beers on sale, nice bar staff (thanks for all your help Dave), in a generally idiot-free environment hidden just off West St. Requests on the wall if there's anything you'd like us to play. Tax: free all night Residents Juliun/Patrick, playing stuff like: Clone, Viewlexx, Trax, Tirk, Warp, Creme Organization. Claude Young, Larry Heard, QX-1, Maurice Fulton/Syclops/Boof, Prince, I-F, Der Zyklus, Dopplereffekt, Drexciya, Daniel Wang, Armando, Dexter, Robert Hood/M-Plant, Metro Area, Mike Agent X Clark, Jamal Moss/Hieroglyphic Being, L.I.E.S., Aux 88, Detroit in Effect, Kraftwerk, Chris & Cosey, Patrick Adams, International Feel, LFO, Moodymann, Eskimo, Trouble Funk, DMX Krew, Todd Terje, Move D, Workshop, Cybotron, Detroit Grand Pubahs, Optic Nerve, Mark E, Green Velvet, Afrika Bambaataa, Actress, Legowelt, Kompakt, Theo Parrish, Man Parrish, Moroder, Autechre, Lory D, Street Sounds, June, John Carpenter, Unit Moebius, Throne of Blood, Mr De', Margaret Dygas, Phuture/Pierre's Pfantasy Club, Duplex, Bangkok Impact, Dynamix II, Mathematics, Grace Jones
  11. As well as those ones there's Cargo (got Prosumer coming up at Fez), Delve Deeper (deep house, doing an all-dayer at the Washington soon) and a new one called Huddle (got 6th Borough Project coming up soon at DLS). If you search for any of those on Facebook you'll find some nights to interest you I reckon, the house scene is going strong in Sheffield right now
  12. They're doing an announcement in the next few days about whether it'll happen again, one of the people involved said 9,000 - 10,000 wristbands got sold. To quote from their website, 'we are a not-for-profit event and any money made will immediately be invested into the city’s sporting and cultural events', which I presume includes Tramlines 2013 as some of the organisers are the same. Well done to them, it's great for the city that people are doing things like this
  13. BOX JAMS #11 Friday 10th August at Harrisons 1854 Bar (off West St, on Regents Terrace) Number 11, and with Juliun on holiday we're welcoming ex-Remedy resident and living music database Mark Armstrong back into the fold, alongside Sheffield Bleep (Future Music radio), whose fine sounding Wildstyles night has moved from clashing with ours just in time so we can catch Hanal on 3rd. Music policy is the usual e.g. Detroit/Warp/cosmic/Chicago/real electro/Hague/leftfield, plus whatever else we're into at the time. Should be a good 'un, come down if you're about. Pre-club hours (9pm til 12.30am-ish), heated courtyard out back, classic videogame/Detroit dance-off footage projected in the bar, absinthe/decent spirits/world beers on sale, nice bar staff, in a generally idiot-free environment hidden just off West St. Requests on the wall if there's anything you'd like us to play, we blow a lot of money on music every month so as long as it's something roughly within our remit (i.e. not Fool's Gold) you've got a pretty good chance of hearing it. Tax: free all night Clone, Viewlexx, Trax, Tirk, Warp, Creme Organization. Claude Young, Larry Heard, QX-1, Maurice Fulton/Syclops/Boof, Prince, I-F, Der Zyklus, Dopplereffekt, Drexciya, Daniel Wang, Armando, Dexter, Metro Area, Mike Agent X Clark, Jamal Moss/Hieroglyphic Being, L.I.E.S., Aux 88, Detroit in Effect, Kraftwerk, Chris & Cosey, Patrick Adams, International Feel, LFO, Moodymann, Eskimo, Trouble Funk, DMX Krew, Todd Terje, Move D, Workshop, Cybotron, Detroit Grand Pubahs, Optic Nerve, Mark E, Green Velvet, Afrika Bambaataa, Actress, Legowelt, Kompakt, Theo Parrish, Man Parrish, Moroder, Autechre, Lory D, Street Sounds, June, John Carpenter, Unit Moebius, Throne of Blood, Mr De', Margaret Dygas, Phuture/Pierre's Pfantasy Club, Duplex, Bangkok Impact, Dynamix II, Mathematics, Grace Jones
  14. Yeah, couldn't agree more. £12 for a whole day of bands and entertainment, I ask you. It's just like when I went to the cinema after Tramlines and they expected me to pay to get in - outrageous. Then afterwards, when I went to MacDonalds, I was astounded when they wanted some money for my Big Mac - they'd have a lot more people in there if they just gave away the food for nothing. They should just get volunteers to work in there and do that I reckon.
  15. Indiv thread gone so gonna have to post Signals (21st July at Yellow Arch) info in here, hope people coming see it... Bit of info FYI ahead of Saturday: You don’t need a ticket, but Yellow Arch Studios is an intimate venue, so we do recommend you arrive early, especially if you're coming from another city just for this event. Rocking up exactly when Objekt is due on in the evening and expecting to waltz in isn't a good plan. Running order has recently been announced on Twitter, times are on Facebook in a few places, they're also in the programme. There is no cloakroom, and we're not going to have room to put coats behind decks etc so travelling light is best. Bring enough money and fags to last you as if you leave the site, we do not guarantee re-entry even with a stamp. We'll have Jamaican and Asian food (inc vegetarian) on sale. Yellow Arch studios is being treated by us as 2 areas (upstairs rooms/downstairs room & courtyard), each of which has nearly 500 capacity. You’ll be able to move between areas freely, capacity allowing (e.g. the whole crowd won’t fit in one room). Follow @tramlines and @signals_sheff on Twitter for any last minute announcements/changes.
