  1. Has anyone been past the Old Town Hall today (Sunday) on Waingate and seen a sign up saying it's up for auction or sale again?
  2. Free Christmas crafts session in the bowling pavilion on Firth Park Road opposite the doctors surgery on Firth Park Road. Refreshments are provided - this is open to anyone of any age. If you have young children and wish to attend for an hour that's fine too, there are things to keep the children occupied. All free! Between 1pm - 3pm on Tuesday 19th December. 07903230266 for more info.
  3. I am so tired of people slating the North East of Sheffield. Firth Park is NOT a no go area although it has its problems. I know 70 year old women who don't have a problem walking around the centre at night. It's not perfect by any means - I've lived in the area most of my life and yes it's changed but I don't see it as being any worse or better than when I was a teenager. Just different. Yes there are issues with integration - most of the time it's down to people being suspicious from the word go. Heeley etc has a different vibe to it and it's a fair bit smaller. People are generally more tolerant and will talk to one another - so integration happens mostly. It used to in Firth Park - somewhere along the line people got mistrustful. Maybe it is down to the size of the area. FP is a good deal bigger and it needs more 'work' to make the effort and there are more people so it's harder to know everyone and easier to start feeling a bit lost and alienated I guess.
  4. No one has yet mentioned Wortley Hall and gardens which is just outside Sheffield and is lovely. I visited the other day for a tour of the house (which is owned via shares by people who belong to trade unions). It was very interesting. There is the house itself where they do cream teas and have carvery and gourmet meals on different days, and other different events. There are the gardens, rose gardens and the more extensive wilder parts of the grounds including a pond which had a system for feeding the winter ice into an ice house which is still there underground. There is an oak tree which is between 350 - 500 years old, completely hollow and still living. And the walled garden run by Heeley City Farm which is a fully operational organic kitchen garden again complete with orchard. They sometimes have conventions there, you'd have to check, the last one I went to was a Riley car gathering and they had all the pre 1930s cars lined up in front of the hall. The village itself has a fantastic pub with award winning food. If you check in the tourist info office by the winter gardens they can give you info on the walking tours they do. Def have a look at the Cathedral as it has been renovated also the catholic cathedral St Maries which is in the process of having a face lift too. The General Cemetery is having the chapel restored and they do tours also Wardsend Cemetery has got it's act together and they do tours and have big plans for future heritage events. Hills Fest a big new arts festival in Hillsborough Park is on the 9th/10th July I believe. Abbeydale picture House is coming along fantastically - they have regular event and film showings there. Really, you'd need a month just to get round the things already suggested! There is so much more but I think you'd end up with too much choice
  5. Yes it is unwanted I never said it wasn't. Yes it is tagging, there are lots of differentiations perhaps which haven't made it into the Oxford dictionary yet but there you go. Yes they will still do it but cuts don't help directly or indirectly there are correlations. How can I be related to Jon Snow? He's a fictional character I wouldn't want to be anyway - the things I'd do to that lad it would be wrong. But I suppose that would just make me a Lannister
  6. At the risk of being lambasted - what people are talking about here is tagging which is not graffiti. Its prevalence is due to a combination of several things, the council has less money to deal with things like this, disproportionately so in comparison to other cities as we are getting hammered with cuts far and above others, cuts to services such as the police pcso's etc and lack of youth services to keep all the bored and itchy fingered yoofs occupied with other things being the main ones I can think of. It's a pain in the arse for businesses who have to remove it at their own cost and does look scruffy. How to combat it - I honestly don't know. Council is all on trying to provide statutory services with another £50 million in cuts over the next 3 years so fresh out of ideas.
  7. I hope it doesn't close. I go to the pictures a lot and the Odeon, along with the Showroom, are my cinemas of choice. Over the last 6 months or so I've probably been to see a film at least twice a week a various places across Sheffield. Cineworld - nearly fell through the floor when I realised the ticket price. Had to consider taking out a bank loan for the popcorn etc. Since it's refurb it feels impersonal and I felt like I was in the middle of some surreal nightmare with all the flashing lights, big screens and constant ads, ads, ads. I needed a lie down after visiting that one. And it is a right pain in the backside to get to if you don't have a car. I never return there in a hurry unless what I want to see isn't on at the others. Vue - about the same as Cineworld although slightly cheaper. Plus it resides in that seventh circle of hell, Meadowhall full of people rushing around spending money they don't have, on tat they don't need like the world will end tomorrow or something. More than enough reason to avoid like the plague. Also a pain in the rear to get to. Two buses or a taxi. All the food is served with plastic forks etc in the food court. Felt like being in school again. Plus I can never hear myself think. Showroom - cheaper than both the above, shows a great range of films and has two big and two small screens. Seats are proper cinema seats, none of this pretend leather, cough and you slide off them rubbish like in the flashier places. Fairly decent food, coffee etc in the bar adjoining or failing that you get get amazing chips from the Rutland just down the way. Their snacks counter has become tired and limited over the last few years but they still do great ice cream from local businesses. And I think they are refurbing soon too. People go there to watch the films. Not faff with their phones or pee about talking, another of my huge bugbears with Vue and Cineworld. Fairly easy to get to. Odeon - Cheap and cheerful. It has 3 huge screens and lots of smaller ones. Full range of snacks. Buy tickets from the machines or at the counter when you get snacks. The staff are very friendly. It's easy to get to as my bus stops fairly near and the return bus is just across the road. Plenty of places to go get something to eat beforehand including the brilliant Street Food Chef, Blue Moon, Tamper (also good for the Showroom). Yes it could do with a bit of sprucing up but in a way I kind of like the lived in feel of the screens downstairs. The bigger screens have new seating. The area where you buy tickets etc does not feel like NASA central thank god. No big screens, no neon. On balance all of them get about the same amount of traffic I'd say. Sometimes they are rammed, sometimes nice and quiet. Depends on the film you see, what time and/or day you see it, whether it's coming to the end of its run, how much hype etc. Can't say about Curzon as I've only ever peered in through the doors to see what they have on. Never anything I fancy or haven't seen elsewhere. Although I've been told they don't let any rif raf in
  8. It sounds like you mean the old school building Pye Bank. It was supposed to be redeveloped but not sure what happened as it's been empty for at least a decade. See here http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/pye-bank-primary-school-sheffield-april-2015.t95729
  9. Does anyone have the original theatre release versions of Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi? Going to see the new one and watched these first; horrified that they have replaced voices and actors to fit in with the prequels (which I didn't think much of). Sacrilege! I know they deleted them but does someone have them somewhere? cheers
  10. Female cat about 5 years old. Spayed and chipped Very distinct tabby markings in dark brown over lighter brown. Very bright green eyes. Carries her tail in a sort of question mark formation when walking. Last seen early hours of 31st December. She never and I mean never, stays out for more than about 15 mins and only then in the evenings when I'm home or out in the garden. Always without fail bouncing around the bedroom at 7am in the morning wanting breakfast and no sign of her today. Lives in the Ivyhall Road area of Shiregreen behind Nethershire. Had a wander round some of the surrounding streets calling and rattling crunchy box but no luck. Rung Streetforce; nothing there. Putting on the RSPCA lost page any other ideas? I feel ill as she has never been gone for this length of time ever in all the time I've had her. Very upset as not like her at all. Had a bad year and she's the only thing that is keeping me going at the moment - I just want her to come home. Message me here or ring 07903230266. Thank you
  11. So annoyed with the buses now. I have never taken learning to drive seriously mostly because I had a bus service with a stop 5 mins from my home, with a frequency of every 12 or so minutes in the day and 15 mins ish in the evenings which took me pretty much where I needed to go. Work in Heeley, town, the bus station etc. I could go out in the evenings knowing I'd never be stood longer than 15 minutes waiting for a bus. I have a busy life but the service got me where I needed to be most of the time pretty much on time. Not so any more. I now have to take two buses or one bus and a 30 minute walk to the bus stop or work depending on which service I use. And a reduced frequency in the evenings so much so that what used to be an hours trip to the Tesco took me 2 1/2 hours last week. To say I was losing the will is an understatement. The extra 30 minutes per journey adds at least an hour to my travel time and I can not afford that in a day that is already packed with a very full on, time consuming charity job and fitting in all the necessary commitments around this work. I would actually like to be able to get some sleep at some point. And they are expecting us to pay more for less of a service. I don't really care if the universal ticket is £4 a day and for only 10p more you can get on all providers buses. It's still more money and I'm being forced into it because of a lesser service. I don't take kindly to being held to ransom. Please can we have the 47/48 back? Please? Because otherwise I'm getting a car. As much as I want to continue to support public transport I can't in it's current format. I don't have an extra hour to give to travelling on the buses as they are now.
  12. Today - 3 items for a £1 on adult clothes! Lots of bric a brac to have a rummage through all starts at 12
  13. That is very lovely. We had a similar thing happen just before Christmas. My son bought some shopping at our co op and came to pay but my card was declined something to do with new bank charges I hadn't accounted for. It meant I had no money in my account - son had none in his so he had to say sorry we'll have to put it all back as Mum will have to go borrow some cash from a friend to tide us over. The girl behind the counter though said she'd pay for it for us and just told my son to bring the money on Christmas eve when she was working next! We do use the shop a couple of times a week so she knew we'd be in again but when my son told me I was gobsmacked (very nearly burst into tears). It was about £30 so quite a lot. And we did pay her back on Christmas eve with much thanks There are lots of helpful kind people in the world - we just never hear about it!
  14. Erm they are introducing an oyster card for south yorkshire called a smart card http://www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/smartcard/ Day savers etc will be added soon And as for change - I collect it in a dish so if I have to use a bus I can take some with me
  15. This is happening in reception again as building work still hasn't started on the site. Reception classroom is by the main entrance to the Farm on Richards Road and next to the duck pond Hope to see some of you there
