  1. Really disappointed with the pavements on Carter Knowle Avenue, many of the edging stones between the pavement and the grass verges had deteriorated badly and have been replaced, but the concrete on others has crumbled and haven't been replaced...after a few more winters they will be shot and the grass will overrun on to the asphalt pavement again..back to square one!...Sure someone in charge ain't doing their job right....
  2. My elderly father in law use to really enjoy bilberry pie when he was a youngster, as he is approaching his 88th birthday my wife thought she would bake him a bilberry pie....problem is, no one seems to stock fresh or jarred bilberries in the Sheffield region...tried all the usual supermarkets and local shops, they got blueberries but not bilberries.,...any ideas?...thanks.
  3. We are experiencing nasty pong coming up through the waste fitting in our kitchen sink unit and sink basin in our bathroom... Took all the waste pipework apart and cleaned thoroughly but the smell still persist..Also checked the main drain from the back of our house to the front main drain and no blockage etc..... anyone living in Carter knowle area noticed bad smells coming from drains, particularly Carter Knowle Avenue?...
  4. Hi Dun working, I remember your father well, always cheerful, never short of a smile...nice to know he had a long and happy life....sorry I got his name wrong, thought it was Eric,he must have been in his mid forties when I new him......Where did he work after Wilks closed down? ---------- Post added 07-07-2015 at 22:07 ---------- Don't think this is the same Wilks, they use to sell lawn mowers, they might have repaired them at one time but I don't remember them doing so......Wilks did get taken over by a company called Mercian Builders Merchants, they were the company that shut Wilks down when it stated to lose money...Great shame.
  5. I worked at Wilks for three years in the late sixties/early seventies when I was in my late teens, but was made redundant when it shut down around 1972/3.. The store (now a Central health clinic) was located on the corner of Norfolk Street / Mulberry Street opposite the Crucible Theatre. I have great memories of that store, it was full of knowledgeable and character-able staff who I remember fondly. Their was Mr Harris the manager, Mr Harvey Pratt the assistant manager, a great guy and always had time for you, Mike Turner the kitchen furniture manager who I worked with, Jim Shaw, Bernard Wilkinson, Charlie the dispatch manager ( always popping into the Mulberry Tavern for a quickie) Mr Goddard the gardening manager,(always first to clock out!) Mr Millie the buyer, The lovely Sue Burkin, Denise (mad on Marc Bolan) in accounts, Brian and Mick in transport, Eric Pierson the office manager, Horace Parkin the hardware genius, Ginger haired Georgina, David Peckett on decorating, Bill Robinson,( lovely bloke) Barbara the odd job lady, and lastly a great lady who was in charge of the canteen, Mrs Beal, very proud of her new Hillman Avenger! I,m sixty three now and most of the above were older than me so sadly may no longer be with us. Love to hear from anyone associated with above.
  6. Anybody know what kind of new trees have been planted on Carterknowle Road? Are they the same as the ones they have replaced?
  7. We had new LED street lights fitted on Carterknowle Road, The work started in May this year and still not finished.......Some of the lights have galvanised steel post others are black, what's all that about, poor supervision by whoever's in charge...however, they do have a good spread of light.
  8. Can anyone recommend a good but reasonably priced registered electrician..Need electric shower replacing and new consumer unit exchange, Carter knowle area....Thanks.
  9. Anyone have any idea when the new street lights will be all up and working on this road and the old ones dug up and taken away?....seems like weeks since they started but no one working on them now.
  10. What a waste of material, why not make a decent cover an have done with it......we've replaced ours 4 times...must be costing the c/tax payer thousands!
  11. I have seen ordinary drivers turn up Sheldon Road no end of times dispite "No Right Turn" sign on the tarmac on Abbeydale Road in big white letters...a bad accident is waiting to happen....City Council, please take note!
  12. Wow, I can only say the bin men we have have been brilliant over the years, they work pretty fast and in hot weather it's hard work....In some case's they have to empty disabled people's bins which are often keep yards away in back yards and up/down steps, not good in heavy snow and rain etc...not to mention enduring the honking horns of impatient drivers when they block the road for a few minutes...I think they are worth every penny and we are lucky to have them.......
  13. An old joke but still funny...about a man driving his van and getting it stuck under a low bridge, a policeman walks by and says,Hello, Hello, Hello, what we got ere then?...the driver reply's,"Nothing much Officer, just delivering this bridge!....
  14. I was once driving on Little London Road and stopped my car to pick up a wallet in the middle of the road, opened it up and found about 80 quid in it plus cards...Took it home and phoned the guy up, ( his address was on paperwork in the wallet so only took two minutes to get his phone number) His wife answered the phone and said O'no,I'm fed up of him loosing it!.....Anyway I told her to tell him he could pick it up from me at my place of work later that day........Few hours later he came to collect it, gave me a half hearted "Thanks" and walked off....I was disgusted in him, half wished I'de have put his £80 in a charity box and just handed the wallet in to the police but I'm too honest for that......anyone else had a similar experience?
