  1. The cord pull isolator switch for my electric shower has broken (pull the cord and nothing happens) and I'm looking for someone to replace it for me. I know it's a relatively small job so can anyone recommend someone who would be able to help me out? I'm in S6 (Hillsborough). Thanks
  2. Has anyone used Kitchen Experts Sheffield for their kitchen? I've had them round for a quote (seemed nice, knowledgeable and reasonably priced ) but wondering if anyone had any experience of their work before I think about moving forward with them.
  3. Hi, Any reccomendations for someone to come in once or twice or day to look after my cat who cover Hillsborough? She's a rescue cat I've only recently adopted so don't want to put her in a cattery as I'm concerned it will stress her out too much but need to go away for a couple of nights. Any personal recommendations would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks
  4. I'm looking to get trickle vents added to my uPVC windows to help improve ventilation. Can anyone recommend someone who may be able to help? I'm in S6 (Hillsborough). Thanks
  5. I've just discovered a small damp patch on my living room wall previously hidden by the curtains. Based on the position, I think (but am not sure) that water may be getting in at the point the outside window ledge in the bay meets the wall but could do with someone coming to have a look. Can anyone recommend someone (I'm presuming builder?)? I'm in S6 (Hillsborough). Thanks.
  6. Hi, I was wondering if anyone could tell me whether the quote I've received to address a small damp patch which appeared in an upstairs room following the horrible weather on Monday night. I sometimes worry I'm being taken for a ride because I really don't know much about this kind of stuff and I wonder if people see me and think I'm an easy few quid. I had a roofer round yesterday to look and he couldn't actually get up to the roof where the water must be coming in because of where my sky dish is placed but looked from across the road. Based on that he said some of the roof slates were a bit "skew-iff" and the flashing between me and next door needed re-pointing. I've come home from work and found the quote he promised which involves removing and replacing the dislodged roof slates and then re-pointing all the flashing on this side of the house and quoting £260 for the job. I am not a roofer but if the slates are just knocked slightly out of place, can they not just be put back in to place, rather than needing to replace them? Given the roofer couldn't even look close up at the problem area as he couldn't get on the roof, how accurate an assessment of the issue is this and is £260 a reasonable quote for this? I have called another company to come and look as well to get a second opinion but I just wanted to see if anyone could feedback based on this information? Thanks
  7. I have no issue with the doing the work but I agree the bus service last summer was horrendous, they need to work on it. I might try to go along to the meeting to see what they've got to say about it!
  8. I can't make any comments about Birley Carr as I don't know the area but if public transport links are one of your priorities, I too would suggest looking nearer Hillsborough. I bought my first house in Hillsborough a couple of years ago and I've been really happy here. The easy access to the tram, plus loads of bus routes through here as well is great. There's also plenty of decently priced houses in the area and your money can go a fair way. Good luck in your search, buying your first house is an exciting and slightly scary (in a good way) time!
  9. The area doesn't exactly have the best reputation but I lived in a flat on Queen Mary Rise (just off Queen Mary Road) for about 6 years and as a single female in my 20's, I never felt particularly threatened and didn't have any problems with crime etc. I'm assuming you're looking at the new-ish estate there? They did a lot of work to improve the area and turned it from a large council estate into a new development, so some of people's perceptions of the area are based on its previous reputation, which was much more deserved. The new development attracted a lot of renters and first time buyers due to the property prices. When I would tell people where I lived, they all thought I was crazy and/or going to be mugged 5 times on my way home but when they actually visited the area, changed their mind about it. But as a single female, I would be more wary at night and take taxis home when travelling alone and late at night rather than walking but that's the sort of thing that I regard as being sensible! That's not to say there's no crime there, from what I witnessed, it was mainly cars being broken for sat navs etc into but that kind of thing happens everywhere. You do also get groups of teenagers hanging around but like I said, I never felt particularly threatened by them. Everyone has different perceptions of threat though, so just because I felt okay, doesn't mean everyone would. If you are considering moving there, particularly if buying a property as you're more tied to an area than if you're renting, make sure to visit the area at all times of day, especially in the evening to make sure you feel comfortable there. Walk around, rather than driving as things seem and feel completely different when on foot compared to in a car. Good luck, whatever you decide.
  10. They are still around. I left work early for once today and there was a group of them making a nuisance of themselves at Barnsley station when I got there at about 3.15. They have some catchy slogans like 'What do we want? Free train travel' 'When do we want it? Now!' And 'South Yorkshire Travel hear us say free train travel here to stay'. They really are pushing the boat out with the quality of their chants! They stood around being noisy by the ticket office and then about 5 minutes before the train to Sheffield was due they all traipsed over to the other platform so they could tell everyone who had actually paid money to buy a ticket to travel how unfair it is that they can't travel for free. Looking around at everyone else waiting, I don't think they had too much support for their 'cause'. I did also have to question their reworking of We Shall Overcome (now We Shall Not Be Stopped) as using a American civil rights song primarily associated with the fight for equal rights to promote a 'cause' whereby some people think they should be getting special treatment (free train travel) while the rest of us have to pay for it. As I've said elsewhere in this thread, I don't disagree with the free bus pass for the disabled and elderly but at a cost to everyone else, completely disagree with this 'cause'. Hence the sarcastic quote marks.
  11. For the people looking for a city centre hairdresser, I can recommend Mike at Hair Kandi on West Street.
  12. I don't think people are complaining about the event occurring, it's more about the route that was chosen for the run to occur along. Penistone Road is notorious for poor traffic flow and as it's a major route through/out of Sheffield with few easy alternatives, it's caused complete chaos by closing it. Surely there were different routes that could have been run which wouldn't have caused quite so much chaos for so many people.
  13. Can I add, the trams (and possibly buses) are also experiencing severe delays for the same reason. From Shalesmore to Middlewood/Malin Bridge is incredibly slow, this is causing knock in disruptions across the rest of the network. It took me over an hour to get from home to City Hall tram stop, between the wait at Malin Bridge for the tram to actually arrive and then the crawl along Holme Lane and Langsett Road.
  14. But what about people, like me, who are getting off trains at the station and want to catch a tram going into/through town? When a Blue route tram normally stops at the station coming from Halfway, some people get off the tram, others get on. The people getting off the tram are fine, what about the people who would have got on here?? The station is therefore the only stop which isn't getting full service in both directions (even if on a bus, rather than a tram). Is it just me that finds this silly?
  15. So, not stopping at the station then. Shrewsbury Road is next to Granville Road tram stop and is about the same distance, if not further, than the interchange is from the station. And there are more services available at the interchange towards replacement buses/other services.
