  1. I've just had to scrap my old Micra - the going rate seems to be £150 - £200 per tonne, which is pretty much what my Micra weighed and I'm guessing a Clio is about the same.
  2. My father is a horologist with around 30 years of experience mending clocks of all kinds (unfortunately he's based in south Wales nowadays). As mentioned by all the other *professional* clock repairers referred to here, WD40 is well and truly the last thing you want to be putting on the movement - please don't do it!
  3. The university used to have a couple of cams over the concourse. Only two were linked to but the url's were sequential. One day, out of curiosity, I typed in '3' - it turned out to be a camera on it's side on some guy's desk. i kept watching for ages but nothing ever happened. Precious hours that I'll never get back :-(
  4. I'll keep an eye out but the nearest I've come so far is a wayward paraglider up near Abney.
  5. There are loads of great birds about near the reservoirs at the moment. On a quick run up Win Hill the other day I managed to spot loads of bullfinches and goldfinches, curlew, peewit, an oystercatcher and one of the Bamford buzzards (I've counted 3 but there may be more).
  6. Many cities in Western Europe have something of an east / west housing divide that harks back to the times of the industrial revolution. It's due, at least in part, to prevailing wind directions - the larger, 'posher' houses for the owners are built on the west, upwind of the factories. The workers houses were built on the east, on the downwind side.
  7. I go most weeks and a lot of the stallholders are regulars - there's a fair chance they'll be there next week if you get there early enough...
  8. Well if you put on some trainers and buy yourself a compass I'm sure you can... But seriously, why are you getting this irate? It's just two days (one for setting up the controls and one for running the event, and before you ask I have nothing to do with it). Public roads and spaces are shut for this sort of thing all the time and the organisers will undoubtedly be paying a pretty penny for it, on top of their taxes. And it's not like it's the only place in the world to walk the dog.
  9. Alan's SoM - http://www.alansschoolofmotoring.net I have no experience of them, but they seem to be pretty reputable.
  10. You're welcome Its amazing how low some of the RAF planes and 'copters fly over the village - sometimes lower than the top of the church! On occasions we've been out walking the dog when they come whizzing over the fields - its like something out of Apocalypse Now (starts humming Ride of the Valkyries). Was it the silver Dakota you saw? That was over a lot a couple of years ago on the 65th anniversary.
  11. It very much depends on the constituents and volume eaten. Our dog has broken into our compost bin to get at the treasure inside with no side effects, but then it's organic and he didn't manage to scoff much before being discovered. However, some proprietary composts may contain chemicals that can be harmful. If you're worried, just give your vet a call - they should be able to provide advice over the phone.
  12. I got the wrong end of the stick reading the title - I imagined a parade and dogs in rainbow garlands. Mr H would have loved it too...
  13. I got some StaFresh from Killis - it sounds very much like what you describe and gets rid of urine smells nicely (I think it's also used in nursing homes!).
  14. If you've got a torch to hand it can be useful to see where the quick is in dark nails.
  15. I live in Bamford and we quite often get Tornados / smaller jets / Chinooks etc. flying down over the dams and towards Chatsworth from somewhere further north (I guess one of the airbases in North Yorks or Cumbria). As others have mentioned, we also see the Dakota and / or Lancaster - esp. around the 'Dam Busters' anniversary. The helicopter is likely to be one of the tours that go from near Owler Bar or Fox House (although I believe there is also one that looks out for fires etc. on the moors). We also get quite a few 'amateur' pilots in smaller Cessnas and the like, pretending that they're on a bombing run :-)
