  1. Hello - we lived at number 17 on the opposite side. We could run down the hill from Upperthorpe school right into our back garden. Moody's was the corner shop. They sold Fletchers bread and egg custards which were tuppence each. I loved them. Hughes was the beer off shop at the end of the street in Woollen Lane. Mrs. Bingley sold potatoes and veggies out of her front room in Kelvin St. My mother & dad lived there from 1930 with 3 children and we finished up with 7. Happy Childhood for me. All the neighbours were like family.
  2. We lived on Walkley St. at the top of Burgoyne Rd. We had been married a year and the baby slept through it and didn't even turn over in his crib but he was covered in an inch of soot as the chimney had fallen straight through the roof. All my clean washing was on the clothes rack in the kitchen and that too was covered in soot. I thought the world had come to an end because of all the sirens from the police cars and ambulances. The people two doors away were rehoused. They had 3 daughters... their eldest babysat for us and the middle one used to wheel the baby for me. I really missed them when they left. But we moved ourselves 2 yrs later to a new house in Ecclesfield. Memories....
  3. Hi - all my family went to Upperthorpe. We lived on Jenkinson St. I left at 11 because I passed the 11 plus and went to Marlcliffe. I remember hating it and wanting to come back to Upperthorpe. This was 1952. I remember Mrs. Midgley being the teacher of the "baby class" and Mrs. Parkin was our Junior 4 teacher. Half of the class passed their 11 plus that year. She was a good teacher. The girls I remember are Vera Cutler, Maureen Brummitt,Pat Walker, Marie Daff. Pauline (nee Fellows). I don't know why I am on this site right now because its almost midnight in Canada. Anyway I think the older you get you start to think about your school days.
  4. Hello Frank - I do remember that Audrey had an older brother. I have an older sister Brenda (Fellows) who went to Barts probably 1949 - 1952. I remember going to your house in King James St. with Christine (Hall) who was a close friend of Audrey's. I did go back to the Reunion in 1999 which was held at Bradfield Road Club. Audrey looked very good then. She was very attractive even as a 15 yr. old. I remember you had an aunt who lived just on Grammar St. My sister Brenda was a close friend of Margaret Rutherford who I think lived a few days away from you. I still keep in touch with Christine even though we have been in Canada since 1969. Pauline
  5. Hello Jennifer, my husband was before your time.. he left in 1954 to go to Central Tech on West St. Its funny but the older you get you think more about were you grew up. I went to Upperthorpe school and then to Marlcliffe. Been in Canada since 1969. Go back to Sheffield every couple of years to see family. Pauline ---------- Post added 20-02-2013 at 06:34 ---------- Hi - Alan Waddingham was my husband's (Clarence Young who lived in Driffield St went to Burton St. until 1954 then CTS) cousin. We emigrated to Canada but keep in touch with Alan's sister Pam. ---------- Post added 20-02-2013 at 06:41 ---------- Hi, went to Barts every Thurs/Sun nights and to the dance on Saturdays. It was a great time and place to be a teenager with Dan Ware pointing us all in the right direction. Left there in 1958 and started going to the Locarno, met my husband (who found out later went to Bart's before me and left before I joined) and emigrated. Went to Barts with my cousin Maureen Shaw. Still keep in touch with Christine Hall (Gregory). Remember Audrey Barnes, Tina Needham, Betty Copley, Dot Goodison. Good Times. Pauline (Fellows)
  6. Just joined this Forum and not sure how to reply to one person in particular but Bullerboy mentioned Maltby/Baker... they lived at 29 Jenkinson St. we lived at 17 Fellows was the name. I went to Upperthorpe with Denise Maltby, she had a brother Tony (they lived with their grandparents) and then there were I think 3 younger ones who lived with their Mum/Dad.
  7. My mother always rigged us out with checks from Blanchards, Wigfalls was next door and my mother rented an Ada washing machine from them every Monday.. they took it back every Tues. We also got rented the TV from them too. When I got married in 1960 I bought a washer from Dobson's at the top of Wood St. I think for a 10 pound check she paid back 12pound 10shillings.. 25% interest. There was a check shop on Westbar. I think it was next door to the Don pictures. It was called Bradford Woollen. Once I started work I had money and never shopped at Blanchards but went to C&A every Sat. morning for something to wear that night. Life was simple then.
  8. My husband Clarence lived in Driffield St. and went to Burton St. Sch. in 1946 - 1952. then he went to Central Tech. My cousin Maureen Shaw from Rawson St. went there too. My grandma Mrs. Fellows lived at 19 Brough St. so I know the area very well as my grandmother on my mother's side was born at 52 Rawson St. We now live in Canada and can't believe how that area has changed. It looks so small to say that all those people lived there. Dad worked at Andrews Toledo all his life and we lived in the Kelvin on Jenkinson St. Bye P
  9. Hi Anyone work at Siskol Machines on Penistone Road. It was the first job I had after leaving school. I worked in the office and they sent me to shorthand/typing classes on Fri. mornings. It was a great place to work. They had a cafeteria run by Eileen who was a marvellous cook. Unfortunately they went into receivership in 1961 but by that time I was married with a baby so was ready to leave anyway. Pauline:)
  10. Hello - I went to Barts from being 13 to 17 (1954 - 1958). Dan Ware used to run the dances on a Sat. Night and wouldn't allow Elvis Presley records. When he went to the pub we put them on though. We went also on Sunday and Thursday nights. I did go to a Reunion in 1999 (I think). My name is Pauline and was close friends with Christine Hall and Audrey Barnes. I think Audrey passed away a few years ago.... can't believe it. Also Dot Goodison (she's gone too I think). Its lovely to look back on the 50's. We were lucky to grow up during that time. Tara from Canada.
  11. Yes I remember Gertrude St. It was close to the Salvation Army. I have just become a member of this forum to-day. I was born in Jenkinson St. with Hughes beer off on the corner and also Moodys. We lived there from 1930 to 1954. I went to Upperthorpe School 1946 - 1952. We moved to Industry St.up Burgoyne Rd. Emigrated to Canada in 1969. The people who lived in our yard on Jenkinson St.were Clarks,Crookes, Ludlam, Bell,Baines, Baker/Maltby and Clover Our back garden was at the bottom of the hill from Fox Road (2nd entry from Woolen Lane). A woman in the first yard kept pigs and if you took potato peelings she gave you hard sweets. There was a house window shop on Fox Road called Weightmans and she would let you use next months sweet ration.... I had a sweet tooth and was always on the following months coupons.
