It could well be the usb port has dry solder joints or over time the plugging and unplugging of the charger could have dislodged the port and worked a pin loose. You will have to reflow the joints. Do not use fresh solder as the pins are very close, so adding more solder you may create a shorted set of pins.

I have used acronis for years. You can do a back up using a boot disk.

You can do it yourself, there are loads of videos on youtube. I replaced mine last week. The hardest part was replacing the sealing stickers. Order the digitiser from ebay about £20. you will get the prizing off tools with it.
