  1. Thank you Jane, You’ve got it in one! I never considered that.... you can have 100 lingots! 🤓😍 don’t spend them all at once, they’ve taken me 2 years to collect! Or in my best Portuguese, Obrigada Jane, você conseguiu em um! Eu nunca considerei isso ... você pode ter 100 lingotes! 🤓😍 não gaste todos de uma vez, eles me levaram 2 anos para coletar! XX Tony.
  2. I’m trying to sign up to the Liverpool forum. the sign up page has the same ‘random ‘ question every time ! 🙁 it is “ what paper would we never buy”. Can someone enlighten me please? regards Tony M p.s. If you’re on ‘Duolingo’ i’ll Give you some lingots! 👍🤓
  3. Not I! I didn't know any Jacks in our family and I didn't know any other Tony Maris's around Hackenthorpe either...... I didn't know it was such a popular name! I did read what looked my own obituary in the Sheffield Star about 20 years ago though..... very scary! For the record, My Dad was Ernest Maris and I had two sisters Margaret (or Stella as she preferred to be known later) and Elizabeth plus a brother Michael. Ernest is long gone, as is my Mum Winifred, but all the kids are still alive and kicking!! We previously lived on Jaunty Avenue, Base Green, and went to Frecheville Sec Mod after spells at the junior school, (except for Mike who went to the grammar).......
  4. It seems Mr Sharpe was probably the most respected of the teachers we had... He was certainly my favourite. I can't remember what I did to deserve the cane but I selected the short, fat one too....again because I had an interest in Physics! I went on to Sheffield College of Technology to study Physics and Chemistry. This thread keeps throwing up a few names that I do recall when I hear them, Ken Hollingsworth, Stuart Herriott, Janice Higgins, Heather Campbell, Mollie Sherwood, Chris Fowler, Richard Breeze, Richard (Dick) Crookes..... all students, then Mr Sharpe, Miss Green, Mr Slater, Mr & Mrs Bennett, Mr Dyson..... I liked Mr Dyson because he gave me my highest ever mark in any subject in the school, for a kitchen cabinet I built! Borninthe40s (Tony M.)
  5. How spooky is that? I'm Tony Maris and my mother lived on either Carr Forge Road or Carr forge Lane when I'd joined the Fleet Air Arm! I don't recall being married to you!! (unless your name is Cynthia, that is)
  6. I've only just found this thread but I was in your class most of the way through I think! I moved to 39 Jaunty Avenue in 1952/53, started at Frecheville Juniors and was gobsmacked when I failed my 11 plus. I went on to the secondary school, my younger brother always was a bit of a smartarse and passed his! He went on to Thornbridge grammar. I remember most of the names you mentioned including Mr Sharpe, probably the most influential on me ( though I recall being caned by him for some minor misdemeanour). Another pupil name I recall was Rhonda Skelton, a fun girl! There was another too called Janet but I forget the surname....... At the time, I rather enjoyed my time there but not long after leaving, I soon realised it's shortcomings...... I left with no qualifications of note and no foreign languages.... Years of night school and Royal Navy addressed that problem! At that time, I always knew you as Richard, I was Tony Maris, my brother was Mick, Mike or Michael, and I had two sisters who also went through Frecheville, an older one called Margaret (now often known as Stella) and a younger one called Elizabeth. Margaret was a year in front of me, Liz was 7 years behind! It's good to know that some of us are still alive and kicking! By the way, my home is now in Lincolnshire, but I'm currently living in Poole harbour on a boat (midweek at least) ! Kind regards Tony M
  7. Oh my goodness, now there's a memory...... I was 10 at the time and actually saw it.......
  8. I'm DELIGHTED to hear that J F Wilson is still a going conern! The names Jim, Syd and Ron Coe are a real 'blast from the past' for me....... Back in the 60's, I was in the Beighton Wheelers and used to time trial most sunday mornings..... what got me into that was spending my Saturday Afternoons in Jim's shop, but he did eventually build two frames for me! The first one I wrote off when I hit the back of a Triumph Dolomite with my head down, (putting myself in hospital in the process) the other I still have...... sadly, it's outside looking a bit the worse for wear. I've resisted my wife's attempts to dump it though! It still has all the original Campagnolo hubs, brakes, seat stem, gears etc etc....... All the best to you Nigel!
  9. I don't know anything about ghosts around there, but I was surprised to references to 'Deacon House' and 'The Midland Bank'. Back in the early seventies, I started a Photographic Studio (Farrow Photographers) on Hereford Street. This was part of the ground floor of Deacon House.........
  10. I was born in London Road, Heeley (in what is now Ponsfords Furniture shop) back in 1945. I went to Abbeydale Infants school before moving out to Base Green to live, and I then went to Frecheville School. Later, I ran a photographic studio in Hereford Street at the the bottom of The Moor. I am in the (longwinded) process of digitising old my old photos (of which, I have thousands). If anything relevant turns up, I'll let you know! I no longer live in the area but have a soft spot for it, as it was. So far, I've found some (now) historic stuff relating to the Sheffield Silverware Industry and Little Mesters, and some other photos of girls/ladies that worked at The Midland Bank, Deacon House, Hereford Street around 1973 to 1975. I was fortunate enough to photograph entries for 'The Miss Midland Bank Competition'. Tough job but someone had to do it!
  11. I used to know a David Chinn in the 1960's......... a nice family that lived on the edge of Killamarsh. I seem to remember a link with music and teaching but don't quote me! It's a long time ago, And I only knew him for a couple of years. I guess he'd be in his 60's now.
