  1. Research into 9/11 survivors found that talking wasn't necessarily best. They found that the ones that bottled it all up were actually coping better. Dr Seery, whose work was published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, said: "We should be telling people there is likely nothing wrong if they do not want to express their thoughts and feelings after experiencing a collective trauma. "In fact, they can cope quite successfully and, according to our results, are likely to be better off than someone who does want to express his or her feelings." Professor Stephen Joseph, who specialises in trauma following disasters, said that it was important not to generalise about the "right" approach for all patients. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7427532.stm
  2. No, it should just be made more discriminatory to give it meaning again. The indiscriminate handing out of Firsts and 2:1s has devalued them. Perhaps they should be allocated by percentage so the top 5% get a First, next 10% a 2:1 and so on.
  3. I ****ing hate completely reasoned, sensible and rational people!
  4. The outgoing chief prosecutor for England and Wales is in the news today warning about the UK becoming a security state. Sir Ken Macdonald QC warned against "the paraphernalia of paranoia" and "medieval delusions". The outgoing director of public prosecutions gave his warning after the home secretary proposed a database for mobile and internet traffic. But in his final speech, Sir Ken called for "level headedness" and restraint to uphold hard-won freedoms. "We need to take very great care not to fall into a way of life in which freedom's back is broken by the relentless pressure of a security state," he said. The former defence barrister said his period at the top of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) had been a "relentless prosecutorial struggle against terrorism". He warned against sweeping laws that could give the state "enormous powers" to access knowledge and information about ordinary people's lives. "We need to understand that it is in the nature of state power that decisions taken in the next few months and years about how the state may use these powers, and to what extent, are likely to be irreversible. They will be with us forever. And they will in turn will be built upon. "So we should take very great care to imagine the world we are creating before we build it. We might end up living with something we can't bear." http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7680704.stm
  5. Not just the Poll Tax riots. People forget the mass refusals to pay which were much more effective than the riots which were largely the preserve of scruffy louts and hippy travellers who would never have had to pay anyway. I remember getting my summons to the magistrates and standing up in front of them with humdreds of others in Sheffield. The numbers were so high the courts couldn't deal with us all - case dismissed!
  6. I don't go for "Season's Greetings" or worse, the American "Happy Holidays" designed to include Jews because Hannakuh falls close to Christmas, just "Merry Christmas". I don't think your Muslim chums are going to take offense. After all Jesus is one of their prophets.
  7. Better still refuse to carry one. If enough people refuse then the scheme is dead.
  8. You forgot "Does what it says on the tin" and "The devil is in the detail"
  9. I feel sorry for todays kids having only super safe playgrounds patrolled by over anxious parents.
  10. Jeez, this Sheffield Forum is full of some nasty people.
  11. The use of ID for more and more mundane tasks is getting out of hand. I was buying a packet of Polos at Manchester Airport and the sales assistant demanded to see my boarding card. I flat refused and he relented and sold the Polos. These people need standing up to.
  12. Yes, ask a real doctor. I've seen some of the medical advice shared on this forum and frankly it's rubbish.
