  1. Is there just that post office on Charles St in town now? I used to avoid the post office inside Wilko on Haymarket if possible as it always had massive queues. The Charles St post office is pretty small too.
  2. I recently had my ‘smart’ gas meter replaced. It was installed in 2015. It stopped being ‘smart’ a few years ago and we had to send readings instead. Then it recently stopped working altogether as apparently the battery was dead. I personally think that’s quite poor that a meter has such a relatively short lifespan before needing replacement. It probably only worked properly as a smart meter for about 5 years or so. And from what I’ve read online this isn’t uncommon and a lot of smart meters are now coming to the end of their lifespan.
  3. True. But there’s also ‘moderation in all things’ and ‘a little of what you fancy does you good’. Analysing the nutritional composition of everything you eat IMO, on balance does more harm than good for most people. If you’re a bit of a nerdy, scientific type it might work for you but for most ordinary mortals it’s all rather dull and depressing. And vulnerable people can end up with disordered eating when everyday foods are labelled ‘bad’. And poor mental health, stress and anxiety are all bad for the heart! There’s also the saying ‘it’s not the years of life it’s the life in the years that matters’. A drive thru Dunkin Donuts is a new low and a real health concern. For some reason though people seem to prefer to focus things like on a cheese sandwich. It is the Dunkin Donuts type foods and that have caused the obesity problem today. Not the foods that have been eaten for generations. Add to that the new craze for Drive Thrus’s!!
  4. I would love an electric bike in theory. I don’t have one for 2 main reasons. The first is that the standard of driving is appalling and I’m not prepared to risk using one on our roads. The second is that they are very prized target for thieves. I know of a burglary where thieves targeted a house where they knew there was an e bike and went to great lengths to get it (they were disturbed by the occupier and failed fortunately. And this wasn’t in a rough area or in the middle of the night.
  5. Is that a joke? Why pick on the very people who might need a car most? Those that are more likely to have mobility issues and would find it difficult to carry heavy shopping on a bus! Also never mind that ‘over 60’ isn’t retirement age for most and is rising. And that’s just the first things that spring to mind. What needs to happen is for people of all ages to be able to go about their everyday life as much as possible without having to drive.
  6. I wonder when I became the norm for so many parents to drive kids to school? We can all have out opinions on this but I’m sure it can’t be sustainable. Too many cars, too much pollution, too many accidents with drivers rushing around, too much anti social pavement parking. Children ought to go school as locally as possible. I know this is a complex issue not just down to parents choosing a school but the the numbers of children genuinely needing to be driven to school ought to be supported to be kept to a minimum.
  7. I use the bus or walk to town when I need to as it is easier (for my route to town anyway) than driving. I have cycled in the past but stopped after experiencing appalling driving with drivers exiting side roads without looking properly. Also seeing accidents with cyclists injured. As for trains, I agree totally. I haven’t been on a train for over 2 years due to unreliability and overcrowding. Privatisation has a lot to answer for.
  8. Ideally there would be segregated cycle paths. They have these on the continent, Holland and Denmark for example. Obviously it’s not always possible on our cramped little roads but that big new cycle path running along Fargate could be segregated (assuming it isn’t already? It doesn’t look like it on plans). They could be incorporated in other places in town during redevelopment e.g. Pinstone St. Or where there is space or existing very wide paths alongside main roads. Or where a minor road is closed to motor traffic. As far as pedestrians go, I don’t think people generally mind cyclists so long as they are not on footpaths riding at speed around you, expecting you to leap out of way or stand aside whilst they charge through dinging their bell. Hopefully this thread won’t go in the same way as the other one with the ‘I’ve never experienced personally so it can’t be happening and you’re being a right old moaner’ type response.
  9. I don’t think there are a lot of Chinese in Broomhall. It’s quite a mixed area though.
  10. And you stayed of the weekend you’d get Bacon for Breakfast and Ham for Lunch.
  11. 🤣 It is interesting though. These Vegans might be setting themselves up for hair loss.
  12. But a hearing aid would only need a bit of a wipe down and it would good as new. In the old days people wouldn’t have been this picky and wasteful. Just think of all those perfectly functional hearing aids just being dumped as rubbish and the money that could be saved reusing them!
  13. She had a problem with hair loss once but apparently fixed it by eating steak https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-3241163/amp/I-stopped-hair-falling-eating-steak-putting-hot-water-bottles-head-says-Nadine-Dorries-reveals-trauma-alopecia-reduced-tears.html
  14. I suppose a lot of the advice given is driven by the desire for profits. A second hand one will do the job. I know someone who got one from Argos like this and it’s very good apparently https://www.argos.co.uk/product/5647602?clickSR=slp:term:hearing aid:1:209:1
  15. Nicky’s sandwich shop a Broomhill used to be good. I think it’s a Kebab house now.
