  1. Yes Frank B Roper london road..Near to Highfield motors...I bought my first motorcycle suit there..Belstaff black prince two piece. Waterproof and warm,But made you sweat under your arms..Yorkshire folk always have,, in any case
  2. Yes you are right..I used the tram every school day..Meadowhead to Scott Road Pitsmoor. There was a tram shelter and the tram just went back the way it came..As you say the driver swung the connectors round with a long pole. So yes there was NO terminus further on or anywhere else.. The end of the line then..That would be in the !940's/1950's Old bugger now 77 this year
  3. Well shooting brakes woodies estate cars and some times 5 door. But what I like about this Sheffield forum IS the conversation changes to some thing comletely different like Morris Minors and Morris steering problems But estate cars was the common name for all.. depends on when you entered the universe AND of course were you Yorkshire/ Sheffield born??? The morris minor was called a traveller...If you really want to know!! From an Ex bomb site car dealer..but that was yeeeears ago.
  4. Good old Sheffield....Good new Sheffield....Both fond memories and great times. Long ago we left(1972) and we are still in Africa..A completely different way of life...No comparison, really. The exchange rate makes it look cheap. But when on holiday thats fine...But if you live here you earn and spend local currency. So the comparison of a holiday and actually living here are quite different. The weather is better...the people are not Yorkshire people. The people are a mix of different cultures. The lifestyle has some massive contrasts.. Every family wants the basics. Have been back to Sheffield numerous times on holiday and once to go back and live. No we rae different to when we left. We have changed and so has Sheffield...So have you,, whoever is reading this message...Make life what you want it to be..If you can't keep trying.. Anybody who has lived in Sheffield all their lives is just as happy as the ones who haven't..If you are unhappy ...make a change. its not always easy..but make a mistake or make a change..either is a learning experience.. Love Yorkshire and Yorkshire Folk
  5. See you went to collinsons to dance..did you remember a girl called Shirley Chilton..She used to teach there??
  6. Dont know what year you went to ND my sister Pat Kenrick went in the late 40's 50's.. She is trying to find old school pals who are still alive??
  7. He passed away long time back...His car an Austin Healey 100 still sits in the Montague museum in Beulie.? Dont know about his family. But Carlton used to own a pub out on the estate..His life was colourful and high flying when he was young.. There is a website and you can Google it. Gives all the family history. There used to be more on the Sheffield site but maybe its gone now..
  8. Wilson Peck - cheque linen draper - paper **** and hen - ten scotch eggs - legs jerry myers - tyres
  9. lovely Cat.. Yours I guess? Nice area you live in..Used to live in Dronfield Hill Top. Left in 1972. sold my house for 7,950 will be worth 200,000 now i guess. been in Africa since 1972.. Would not come back unless forced out at gunpoint...Not impossible in Africa...Hot weather is a problem as you get:) older. 76 now and love the cool winters 16/20* but the summers are getting hotter 22/28* and the odd few 30* but not too bad...close to the sea and the breeze helps.
  10. The Bell was in small tower at thr top of the stairs...There was a door on the landing you went through to rech the bell ... Cant remember where the rope was.. But the bell had me running most mornings,,
  11. I had a friend called Harry Yeardley..He was a little mister...Worked long hours and was fitting the old style bone handles to cutlery for one of the big firms....He was an Olympic Drinker ans spent his weekends Hiking in Derbyshire...Of course they finished in the pub,,,Barrel at Bretton or the Monsal Head were two of the ones that come to mind.. The Barrel was owned by Fred and Phyliis Feetham... They were ex club acts and used to sing in the pub after and during time called which lasted for hours....Harry died years ago after I left Sheffield I think/// His wife Jean worked at Chestermans?? Time goes by and eras finish...memories are there forever.
  12. Yes as I said I left in 1972.. Went to the then Rhodesia.. Seven plus years and call ups for active service but a great time I would never have missed.. Sounds stupid now but the water has long gone.. Met a guy in Bulawayo Called ED HUBBARD... He was an ex con from a jail in Chilli,,, He ran a successful business and eventually took a large sum from the finance companies...he did time in the local prison...He was deported and made money with a car polish business... He was involved in a big court case in UK called the old No1 Bentley...The records are on the web... He sold the car for 10 million pounds and the case is very interesting... He worked for Coys in London? he was an expert on OLD BENTLEYS..He died some time ago but he reached 80 I think.. He had a brilliant brain and made plenty in his lifetime. As you say many years and few of us left... Me still alive but not kicking as well as used to ...Keep in touch...Our past is all we have the future is very unreliable
  13. If My memory fails me ,,sorry. I remember the Cambridge Motor co Owned by Graham Fowler... but that was years ago....David turner sold me many Zephyr's and Jags and Rovers,, He also ran a Casino somewhere in Sheffield..can't remember when. He sent me some punters who won and they bougth 3 MK 9 jaguars. They were all asleep outside the showroom when we arrived for work..He was a character... Left his wife for a younger woman.. How unusual... Tony Boyes Graham Castleton George Shirtcliffe. He used to obtain the car you wanted usually from Blackpool or some other east coast area...All much older now I am sure... Those days are gone,,, Also Ronnie Spence from London Had a place in warren st...Moved cars from one parking to another to avoid fines.. Memories can be savoured but not repeated....Graham Castleton rented my showroom on Shales moor when I left UK..1972.
