I have my bike serviced at A E Butterworth's shop on Abbeydale Road and he does excellent work at good prices. I don't have a mountain bike, but I think he works on any kind.

The Bike Tree near Dore station (on Abbeydale Road South) seems to be a specialist mountain bike shop, and I've heard the people there are good.

change the brake pads, clean and oil the chain, re-adjust the rear mech, and if necessary adjust the front deraliur as well. thats should make your bike more ridable for very little money.

+1 for Butterworths for repairing ratty old bikes. Wouldnt take mine there, cos its neither old nor ratty and I look after them myself, but I know people who have, and he's cheap as chips and makes a good job.

+1 for Wilsons on City Road also.

Halfords have some decent bike mechanics. The bike I took there came back in good shape. Im not so sure on price though.

He's a Sheffield legend is Tony Butterworth - I didn't even realise he was still going - but if he is then I'd definitely trust him to sort it out for a fair price.

To be honest, bikes aren't that difficult to fix. I'm no bicycle mechanic but I bought one of those Haynes bicycle manuals and they are absolutely brilliant for teaching monkeys like me how to do bicycle repairs. Might be worth investing a few quid in one of them and having a go yourself? Be cheaper in the long run anyhow.

I do some of my own maintenance, but Butterworth has an amazing talent for making my bike run quietly and smoothly and for truing wheels.
