Right, I'm due an upgrade in July, I'm with Tmobile, and only paying £21 a month, for 600 mins, with unlimited texts and internet. I was on SIM only and upgraded to a contract with a phone, and told them I didn't want to pay much more than the £15 I was paying at the time, and got that, with a Samsung Galaxy Apollo, 2 years ago.

Which phone would you recommend I go for next, and are Tmobile likely to let me choose while I'm on a 'cheap' contract? Or for a decent phone will I have to pay more?

The Samsung Galaxy Ace is probably the cheapest lowest-spec smartphone worth considering.

That's not to say it's bad because it's actually very good, it's more of a warning not to purchase the Galaxy W or Y. Just don't expect an iPhone-like experience, unless you install the Espier Launcher (which will give you an iPhone user interface).

Thank you, are they likely to make me go for a lower spec one then, unless I pay £35 or something?

You can do better for £15/month contract, I've seen Sony Xperia Arc at that price, I think it was T-Mobile too. T-Mobile Vivacity is cheaper than the Ace & better. If you want to keep paying around £20/month there's a wider choice, just stay away from anything with a small screen. Have a look at offers on competing networks, then tell T-mobile you want to quit because you've found a better offer, then they might offer to match or beat it.

Be careful with the Sony Experia range... the legendary Sony Ericsson build quality and attention to detail is sadly no more...

I'm sure they'll charge you as much as they think you will pay

I know the Vodafone store will happily charge you £30 a month for the Galaxy Ace (making it nearly as expensive as an iPhone 4S) when you could get it at half that price if you shop around.

You may get a better bargain if you go to an independent store such as Carphone Warehouse or Phones 4U (my preference) that isn't run by one of the major networks.

From my experience... maybe!

The Vodafone store couldn't care less, but the O2 store and Phones 4U are willing to haggle on price.

Just be realistic and remember that you'll get a better phone depending on how much you pay, so don't expect to get an iPhone 4S with 600mins for £20 a month!

Remember to provide proof of competitor deals (a print out of a webpage is sufficient) and MAKE SURE YOU GO AT THE END OF THE MONTH because the salespeople will take a hit on price to meet their sales targets in order to receive a sales bonus.

Use this to your advantage!

When I took the contract out, I could have had an iPhone 3GS or Samsung Galaxy if I had been willing to pay £35, but the Samsung Galaxy Apollo had just been released a day before, and I could have that for £20, and at that time it was still quite a high end phone, just not quite as much so as the Galaxy. Unfortunately, I busted it quite a while ago, and have been using a crappy Nokia C3 for a while now, so anything will be an improvement I shall try to haggle

A lot changes in two years.

That same £35 today will buy you an iPhone 4S or a Samsung Galaxy S3, if you are willing to haggle and possibly switch network provider!

from that link, I'm still looking at £ 31+ for the same package or similar

I expect the iPhone 4 would be a few quid cheaper, but unless you're really tight, you'd be better off with the 4S
