Each to his own. I dont like Jazz, period. I like rock, blues even the odd aria from the opera's, but jazz ? Never understood it.

I agree,Nimrod, each to their own. I also "like rock, blues even the odd aria from the operas" (plus lots, lots more) but also jazz. As far as I'm concerned there's not a lot to understand: the music starts, I start to bop. Instinctive, not intellectual.

If the above is Jazz then yes, I do like it. I like the New Orleans Jazz as well. I think the jazz I dislike was called 'modern jazz'.

thats the misconception, people assume all jazz sounds like the "orchestra falling down a flight of stairs" stereotype, ala improvised / freeform jazz which does take intellect and thought to appreciate fully.

but jazz also encompasses so many types from the classics such as count basie, duke ellington, glen miller, louis armstrong etc
trad jazz (acker bilk, kenny ball and his jazzmen)

Billy Holiday - strange fruit one of the most emotional, saddest songs about racism ever, also a classic jazz song (and definitely no stairs involved)

then theres the cooler stuff from the late 50s / 60s such as miles davis, theolonius monk, bud powel, john coltrane, herbie hancock, blue note etc

moving onto stuff such as jazz fusion, jazz rock...later stuff like courtney pine and on

I've always been slightly interested in Jazz.
I don't own any, and couldn't name a single artist. Nor would I know the different styles etc but I'm keen to learn.

I went to a wedding reception years ago and they had a Jazz band playing and I found it to be a wonderful not-too-loud chillout background music. I've always thought a Jazz bar would be a fantastic place to drink and relax as an alternative to the usual Fri/Sat night anti-social BOOM BOOM BOOM ear-bleeding crap that it hard to avoid nowadays.

I don't suppose we have such a place round these parts?

Artists like him http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=bNPUBwukpo4 have been influenced by Jazz (Renaud Garcia-Fons plays in Jazz bands regularly).

Count the number of strings on his double bass.

May I ask how you listen to your vinyls?

I want to bye a gramophone but I'm really hesitant. I don't want to go through the haste of buying/changing needles.

hahahaha

I think it allows him to make exceptional music, music like no one else.

Same with Ibrahim Maalouf....he plays with a unique trumpet designed by his father which allows him to play "oriental" sounds...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uYkNJMjcxs

Yes I might get a dj one (they are less pleasant to look at but they do the job).

I partly agree.

I would say it depends, something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkTEf...eature=related when you first listen to it, it sounds awful, it's just "noise"...but it's actually genius.

You have to learn to listen.
