I've started this thread after being grossed out by another thread about rabbit stew. I have a pet rabbit, so the thought of it turned my stomach. It seemed to me like he might as well have been making a dog stew or cat stew...

But as a vegetarian, I think any life is still a life - so whether you are eating a pig or the neighbour's cat, it makes little difference! You're still eating a dead animal.

It got me wondering where you Forum meat-eaters draw the line on what to put in your mouths? Do you only eat 'livestock' animals? Or would you munch on animals that we traditionally think of as 'pets'? Are there any animals that you wouldn't eat? And if you do have boundaries - why?

Just curious....

I kind of hold the views on food similar to those expressed by Prince Phillip about the Cantonese "If it has four legs and is not a chair, has wings and is not an aeroplane, or swims and is not a submarine the Cantonese will eat it."

I've eaten Horse, Rabbit and all the other cute animals, however, I'd draw the line at dog and cat - I've seen some of the filth that my old dog Pepper would eat so that just strikes me as awfully wrong

Ive always been of the opinion that as a meat eater,it would be hypocritical of me to eat one animal, but not others.

So I guess in answer to your question,id eat any animal(though to be fair,Id have to be pretty hungry before I tackled a Skunk burger)

Actually,Id REALLY love to try horsemeat(no smutty innuendos thank you )

Unbeknown to my Mum... she ate her own pet Rabbit... which her grandmother decided to cook...

After dinner my Mum would always take scraps out to her Rabbit... but this day when my Mum went to take the scraps out to her Rabbit she noticed it'd gone from its cage... she ran inside in the house telling her Grandmother that her Rabbit wasnt in its cage and asked where it'd gone... all her Grandmother could say was "What do you think you've just eaten!"

How heartless is that for a Child... Clearly the wicked Grandmother...

Not sure i could attempt the thought of eating Dog or Cat...

Normal Meats are fine with me thanx... altho i did once eat Ostrich within a mixed grill whilst on my Hols... tbh didnt taste any different to any other Meats...

It's really tasty, an excellent flavour kind of like beef if memory serves but it was a good 13 odd years ago.

On the topic of horse slaughter, would those who are thinking of trying horsemeat please read this first http://www.ilph.org/campaigns/transportation.asp

But don't you think newborn lambs are cute? Or piglets? Do you eat bacon or mutton?

When I was a meat-eater, I'd have eaten anything, only drawing the line at rats.

I've eaten heaps of weird creatures, the more bizarre the better at the time, and especially when travelling, including frog legs, snails, horse, snake, monkey, caiman (small croc), croc, kangaroo, emu, spiny anteater with the scales still on . There are others I can't recall the names of as in foreign climes.

Flesh was flesh, did it matter where it came from? Not at the time.

When I lived in France, my French 'mum' would prepare brains and lung but they were definitely a non merci regardless of which creature they grew up in!

I think the most unlikely thing I've ever eaten is donkey sausage. It's called saucisson d'ane, and they prepare it in France. Not very tasty and altogether a bit tough.

Hi JBee,

No offence intended - Unfortunately my stomach takes over the typing on these kind of threads

I also agree with Ryan123 - Couldn't eat an ape or monkey. That'd just be fundamentally wrong on many levels.

Regards

SV

Stop it,your making my mouth water

Monkeys/apes are a difficult one, true.Eating an orang-utang would be like tucking into a fat version of Mick Hucknall - dont know if thats a good or a bad thing

PMSL! "Something got me started" ........ Yes that'd be the first course followed by Mick served on a platter of roasted vegetables with an apple in his mouth.

I don't think I did take it out of context Ryan. You said that monkeys are cute, and I replied by pointing out some other animals that are cute.

If what you were trying to say is that monkeys in particular are a type of animal that you have a special regard for, then that is slightly different, but I understand what you mean. As a vegetarian I don't eat any animals, but if I did eat meat then I could never touch horse meat or rabbit meat - it's far too close to home.

Another point with monkey meat is that primates are uncomfortably close to human beings in terms of evolution. It would be kind of like eating a hairy distant cousin, or as another poster pointed out, Mick Hucknell stew!

Would anybody consider canibalism then?

if the need is extreme i would probably eat anything & anyone.
stranded in the himalayas for weeks & weeks.
until then i wont eat duck - (iget quite emotional) or anything that the French rate as a gastronomical delight. (slug, snails, oysters) & 60% of sea "food"
tried my first tiger prawn last week.but only 'cos u couldnt see it in the batter & it was part of the set meal @ Baan Thai.

Never thought we would be talking about "spit-roasting" Mick Hucknall on a family forum

And on that bombshell.....

If it's ever had a pulse, I'll eat it. I'm afraid I don't have any scruples where meat eating is concerned. I find the concept of refusing to eat one type of animal because it's cute rather hypocritical, but each to their own.

I'll eat anything, especially if the choice was "eat it or starve to death".
