Hello, My name is Richard Wright. I live in Walkley.
For about the last 5 months I have had continued problems with unsavoury characters hanging around the back of my property at night taking herion and crack cocaine. When I clean up after them I find discarded needles, human excrement and coke cans with holes bore into them. I have contacted the Police who don't seem to want to know. I've tried everything to keep them away including erecting a fence round the back of my house all to no avail.
I think the drug problem in Walkley is getting out of hand these days. I use maraijuna recreationaly but have never touched any of the harder drugs. I don't know what the answer is.
Perhaps we ought to close some of these noisy clubs that these type of people congregate in. I know there is a club called Niche that has all sorts of unpleasent characters who both take and sell drugs without a care in the world. These people don't respect anything, especially older people like myself. What we need is to bring back national service. Give these young people some responsibilty and dignity.

Please don't post house names/addresses - we have no way of verifying that it's your house, and even then, the internet is not the safest place to tell people where you live.

Firstly Richard I would personally suggest that you display less personal information about yourself on a public forum... you don't know who reads this site and who might hold a grudge for any comments you make.
You can choose to take note of this advice or ignore it, either way I won't be offended, but I just hope the advice helps.
Secondly re:National Service... I agree with you to an extent on this matter and would happily due my national duty if it became law.
Sadly I feel that this wont ever happen again.
Something does need to be done re: drug problems.
But the police and the government are fighting a losing battle in this area and sadly the problem (i feel) will get worse before it gets better!

Geoff, you may want to edit Richard post because the house address is still there at the bottom of the message.

Yeah cheers - was doing it as you posted, but a reminder is always welcome
I'm wary of someone who posts all their details online - it normally means they are setting up someone else. But we will see...

How about putting up some lighting at the back which is operated by sensors? You could also link it up to some loudspeakers which pump out muzac. That should dissuade most people from loitering.

in using illegal drugs recreationally yourself richard, you are infact adding to the problem. money you spend on them finds its way to the dealers.... if there was no demand for this stuff, dealers would not be in business. You are adding to the demand yourself. As for the problem of drugs with young people, it seems that most young people are only concerned with heavy drinking, drugs, and late night clubs. This is the culture. The media compounds the problem by almost promoting this lifestyle - listen to DJs on hallam fm going on about getting totally ****ed all the time, a station with a varied audience but often under 18s. The government is also to blame for almost decriminalising "soft" drugs - this soft lefty approach has led to many of todays problems as it is. But hey, I didn't vote in a labour government so don't blame me. Tough on crime, tougher on the victims of crime - tony martin for example. Remember - burglars are members of society too and need protection from violent homeowners! Please, spare me!

Its the same everywhere in Sheffield, when I was younger it was beer and glue.
The kids need an escape from the crap lives they live, so they do drugs what else is there for them to do? Sheffield is an anti-youth city, always as been always will be.

I live in Walkley and I can't say that I've noticed much of a drug problem. But then I am very unobservant.

Same here, not really noticed any drugs in Walkley. Mind you I did have my shed broken into and an attempted burglary a couple of years ago. A friend's car was stolen a few months ago - they went round the back, entered the kitchen and stole the keys.

Unlikely though it may sound Walkley is my study site (for a PhD in urban ecology). For the last year and a half I've been walking round the area at all kinds of odd hours and have seen very little in the way of dodgy goings on.
The worst problem we have in our Walkley street at the moment is blue bin abuse.

Personally, I think all drugs should be legalised with a system of licencing: you apply for a licence to take controlled substances, and lose it if you abuse it.
Look at alcohol: you can apply for your "alcohol licence" (agewatch ID card) at 18, and if you cause trouble with it, you can get banned under the "pubwatch" sceme.
Just a thought, and it can't be worse than current policy.
