Hi, I would just like to say a big massive thank you to the couple who helped me earlier today on the Rotherham - Meadowhall canal path, also a huge thank you to South Yorkshire Fire Brigade and a big thank you to the RAC man.

My lovely, but not so clever, Springer Spaniel, Barney fell into the canal today, the wall was too high for me to climb down and the water was too high for me to get in. After panicking for a few seconds, I telephoned the Fire Brigade and they came and rescued Barney, if it wasn't for the chap who ran to meet the fire service for me they would have been delayed in getting to us. They managed to winch themselves down and grab my poor Barney, who was extremely cold and shivery and get him out of the water safely within 40minutes of me calling them.

After my thank you's, Barney and I got back to my car where I was able to wrap in him blankets to warm him, unfortunately, that was when the alternator in my car decided to pack up, which is where my thank you to the RAC man comes in!!!!!!!

So all in all, a bit of a disastrous day but it could have been worse if it hadn't been for the best folk that South Yorkshire has to offer, so

THANK YOU!!!!

It could have been a lot worse, you're right. The sight of him looking up at me from the canal was horrible because I couldn't do anything practical to help him.

He is fine now, though it took him a couple of hours to stop shivering and he does smell a bit, but as soon as he was out of the canal he was running around like a good un! In fact, I had to pick him up and remove him from that area as he went dangerously close to the edge again when the fireman had put him down!!! Needless to say, it will be a while before I go back down there, which is a shame because it's a nice walk, but my nerves won't take it!

Poor Barney!!!!

I wouldn't have had my dog on a lead in this situation either - the OP said her dog FELL into the river....in other words it was an ACCIDENT.

Glad Barney was OK, he'll no doubt be none the worse for his adventure, and no doubt lapping up all the affection you're probably giving him

Glad barney is ok , you must remember that a lot of people who comment on this forum are perfect in everything they say and do so if anyone else as an accident or misfortune they can turn a good news thread into a tool with which to beat them with .

Well done to all concerned :SYFRS & RSPCA

thank you for your lovely messages, barney is fine and dandy today, loving his cuddles and is nice and warm, car is better too! to those of you that felt like making snide remarks regarding leads don't waste your time. my story was to say thank you to those that helped and give people faith, not to provide you with a forum to make judgement. OK, time for Barney walk!!!!! x

Ignore them hun - if you had got him on a lead someone would've piped up that just walking isn't proper exercise for a dog. Some people just want to put a downer on peoples day.

poor you and poor Barney. Glad your ok i bet you were so upset and shocked. Great thread when we can be positive and thank the good people of SYFS and RAC.
Final note: good job he was not on a lead he could have dragged you in as well with the weight of his fall, then we may well have been reading a different thread.
