I've been to both the Hallamshire House and the Highcliffe and they were both really lively pubs with an excellent atmosphere and a good range of real ales......I certainly don't think they were ruined by Thornbridge.

I'll be interested to check out the Psalter Tavern at some stage, because that used to be a Friday lunchtime regular when I worked up that neck of the woods.

Thornbridge have also recently received the 'Best Pub Operating Microbrewer' award at the publican awards, so clearly someone thinks they're doing something right.

As long as they don't make too much of a change to the interior of The Bath and continue to offer beers from other breweries alongside their own fabulous range of beers I don't see what the problem is.

Although it may seem like they're taking over the world, I'd say this will be the first traditional city centre pub that they've owned (I don't consider the DaDa Bar a traditional pub).

Thornbridge did run Trippet's for a short time before it became DaDa, and isn't it the Stag they've taken over on Psalter Lane?

Given their track record on guest ales the chances are that you'll only see guest ales once every so often and even then those guest ales will only be from a very small handful of breweries.

Sorry, I meant The Stag.

I've not been there for years, but I have been to the Psalter prior to our Christmas Dinner at Baldwins last year.

They may have run Trippets for a short time, I've certainly had Jaipur in there before it became DaDa. I've always thought of Trippets as a wine bar that started selling real ale, rather than a proper real ale pub like The Bath Hotel.

I guess it's horses for courses, but I've nearly always walked out of The Bath because the beer on offer didn't appeal, now I'm more likely to stay and have a pint.

It seems Thornbridge have enjoyed success to the point where people now are beginning turn on them and want them to fail . Fairly standard for the good folk of Sheffield.

Oh no! Pete McKee prints all over the walls with huge pictrures of 'Sheffield icons'-Cocker, Hawley and him from Reverend and the Makers etc, Henderson's f***** Relish (sorry 'Hendo's'), even in the deserts! I suppose they have to expand while they can, I mean other family business ventures might be heading down the tubes.

Personally I think Thornbridge beers are great and they do brew a variety of different styles so it's not like wall to wall Jaipur. If you don't like Thornbridge beers there's plenty of other real ale pubs nearby like the Devonshire Cat or the Ossett Brewery place The Hop.

The only reservation I have about Thornbridge is that the owner's wife is bitch from hell Emma Harrison of A4e fame. Let's hope that when her company gets done for fraud, she gets sent down and her husband can get shut of her!

hmmm - disappointed in this news. Thornbridge are risking doing a south yorkshire version of Greene King at this rate! how long before they buy out acorn / brew company / crown etc....

I also find many of their beers to be over hopped - i like the occasional very hoppy pint, but not every pint! give me a malty session bitter every now and then!

unlikely - the brewery is even named after the house she bought with their A4e 'winnings'. it's easier to create a smoothly branded, mega brewery with millions behind you.

I think that Thornbridge are one of the very last companies that at least 1 of those breweries would want to be taken over by.

To be honest though, I think Thornbridge are one of those breweries who are more interested in collaboration brews with other breweries then taking them over. And the bigger "craft" breweries such as Thornbridge & Brewdog haven't started taking over other breweries as yet.

aye, yet. i just fear that it could be next on the agenda - supply, then real estate and pub leases come first, then start to control the local rivals.... i hope they dont though.

i'm partial to a Wild Swan and an occasional Jaipur, but i really don't want them to get too much bigger - their beers are now over represented in sheffield imo.

and now i know the A4e thing, i can't help but let it niggle me a bit.

Ah I like the Bath. I hope it doesn't change too much. Nice atmosphere and low key. I hope they dont just paint it all and put a few old suitcases on the walls and start charging an extra pound per beer.

I don't bother about the A4e thing, as far as I'm concerned that's nothing to do with the brewery.

As for Thornbridge getting too much bigger, I wouldn't say they're over represented in Sheffield at the moment, because their pubs seem to be fairly well spread out, but I'd like to think The Bath would be their last venture into the city centre.

Jaipur is my favourite pint and St Peterburg my favourite stout, but there aren't actually that many places you can get it.

To my knowledge:

DaDa, Tap, Dev Cat and Swim are the only regulars for Jaipur.

Out of the centre you have:

Champs - Eccy Road
Greystones - Greystones
Coach & Horses - Dronfield
Hallamshire House - Walkley/Crookes
Stag - Nether Edge?

At a guess I would think Moonshine is far easier to get hold of in Sheffield, yet I don't see people moaning about Abbeydale taking over the world.

Regards

It was great when Thornbridge started taking over pubs, but I think we've reached saturation point. The Bath has had a great range of guest ales recently, whereas Thornbridge pubs like the Hallamshire and the Greystones seem to stock only Thornbridge beers - and much as I like the odd pint of Jaipur, there are times when I want something else (and, yes, occasionally something which isn't completely overpowered with hops).

I like Thornbridge pubs but they should stick to taking over and revamping poor and struggling pubs. There's nothing wrong with The Bath Hotel at the moment - it doesn't need fixing.

To be renamed Brewkitchen@TheBath. ?

Next it`ll be Dev Cat becoming the Derbyshire Cat!

Like others have said, I also like it when Thornbridge turn run down boozers around but that`s Stag, Beauchief and Bath in the last couple of months! They`ll double the price of food and add 50p onto a pint as their first move.

Am I missing something? I've never had a good pint in the Bath Hotel maybe i've just been unlucky but they always seem to have a questionable beer selection from suspect breweries i've never heard of. When I say never heard of I don't mean quirky little micro breweries that are producing something interesting I mean some guy brewing some usually bland and weak beer in his bath tub (probably not in a bath tub but you get the picture). What is with all the Thornbridge bashing and the A4e link she isn't the director its her husband. If I had a choice of a range of suspect beers or a range of Thornbridge beers then I would choose something I know which will be good any day of the week.
