Topic.
I know I can download DOSBox to get my old games working, but I've downloaded it before and haven't been able to get the damn thing to work!
So is there any way to get DOS based games such as Under a Killing Moon and Duke Nukem 3D to work in Windows 7 without DOS Box?
Please do not just tell me to Google, I have.

Both those games work perfectly fine using DosBox. I know this because I installed DB on my Dad's computer so that he could play all the old games he enjoyed.
There is another program you could use, but since you say you've google'd already I won't bother telling you what it's called as it shows up when I google'd too

When did you last try DOSBox?
The first time I tried it, I had a ton of problems. The last time I tried it, it worked perfectly. So it might be worth trying again as it really should be the best way to do it.

No point in telling him to be honest. He's clearly lying about trying Google first, I found Dosbox and an alternative method within 20 secs, which less time than it will have taken him to post the thread in the first place.

honestly, DN3D and such like old DOS games will work perfect under a Virtual Machine (using something like VirtualBox (free)) and download a copy of the DOS floppies (also free now)
install dos, install the game(s) and away you go...

ive got a question
is it just more upto date os's that stop dos games running or can more uptodate hardware too?
i ask because since my dad died ive got his pc which is more suited to pc gaming so i want to swap to that pc was my main machine so i can play more upto date pc games.
BUT
im gonna keep this one too as its a smaller formfactor so will fit under the desk easier, its not perfect gaming wise but was made for bluray playing so is reletively upto date, i wanna install linux on this one for fiddling, could maybe dual boot with an older dos friendly os for dos pc games?
which os is the latest dos friendly os? xp? or 95?
infact i still have a later version of dos i could just go the whole hog and install lol
mind u saying that this one doesnt have a floppy drive lol, but mi dads does................i have alien breed on original floppy

It depends on the game, some games run too fast on newer hardware as they would use the system bus for the game timings. DOSBox really helps there as you can tweak the emulated timings, although it can be a PITA to get it right.
I believe the last full DOS compatible OS was ME (yuk) but XP still worked for a lot of stuff.
Generally though DOSBox is the best bet. I have games which I had tons of problems getting to work on my PC at the time they launched, but work great on DOSBox.
That's the beauty of them emulating a specific hardware configuration, they can tweak it until it works.

Hmm, just had a look on eBay, 486 PCs are going for £499 on there.
Might have to save up a bit or try a second hand shop.
Or even download Dos Box and try again to get it to work.
