Is it against forum rules to have more than one identity? I have just read a thread where the same person appears to be using 2 different user names.

I'm not sure how they would know! Only from maybe the IP address, but having said that it is possible 2 people in the same houshold and using the same machine could have the same IP address.

It is against forum rules to have more than one account, if there are multiple accounts from the same ip but they are different account holders we ask that you report this to the helpdesk so we don't ban as duplicates. If you suspect that somebody has more than one account we ask that you report this to the moderating team.

I'm guessing the OP is referring to this thread: Women's Pensions where it looks as if the OP of that thread has responded to himself with a similar user name.

That thread was started this month, the OP started this thread in April

I was talking to an ex mod friend of mine the other day and they told me that as mods, they have what you might call "pool accounts" that they can use to post under if they wanted to keep there identity secret.

If so that's changed from when I was a mod!

I don't think that applies on THIS forum though.

It doesn't. We use our registered usernames to post and moderate. I was a moderator before I became an admin, and I can state categorically that we don't use 'pool accounts'.

I don't suppose for one minute that any mod or admin on here are going to admit it openly.
On the other hand, I trust this persons word implicitly.

When you see posts from people that have been members for years but only have a hand full of posts you have to wonder why …… within the footy section its pretty obvious that certain people use the “pool account” idea when they want to up the ante a bit so there is no reason for it not to be happening in other areas.

Edit

I was talking about members using multiple accounts, on rereading your post you seem to be suggesting that Mods do it ……… that’s something different altogether.

I had a short spell as a assistant mod in the football section and one of the reasons I packed it in was because of the wrong kind of attention that the “tag” attracts ……. Maybe it’s a good idea for them to have another identity so that they can carry on using the forum without attracting arguments for the sake of it which is what can happen.

Could it have been that they were telling you about the "Dear Forum" facility where they can post a problem for you without using your name

It could have been anything but it wasn't.

No, not on this forum. No pool accounts exist.

I have set up an account for all of the mods to get practice on banning, changing signatures and the like without affecting any 'real' forum users, which also enables me to check out faults reported by users as a user (my account sees things as an admin, not as a user) but genuinely, forum testing is the only purpose.

The mods post as themselves and, on occasion, under the Dear Forum... account on behalf of users to maintain the user's anonymity, but that's it.

So in fact, you yourself have set up another account?

It is against the rules but most of the racists etc on here use multiple usernames to post their crap, and I bet Management knows all about them.

This rule should be changed for those with personality disorders. This rule contravenes the disability discrimination act.

Well I trust my word implicitly as I was both a mod and an admin and know what goes on behind the scenes however I don't know either you or your "friend" so I think I'll stick with reality
