In light of an article in the Star today about the so called "Cultural Industries Quarter" and the fact that millions have been ploughed into it hardly anyone knows what it is.
So thought quick poll would be interesting!
Tell me...
if you know what it is
where it is
and if its any good!

the CIQ stretches from Leadmill road up to the moor. If you do an internet search you'll find out loads of imformation but if you really wanna know the truth behind the scenes speak to people affected by it. For example Victoria quays was regenerated to provide a business park for small local businesses and as a lunch time get way for city centre workaholics. However this never really happened and without any notice new big national businesses were moving in hence the montrousities built on parkways side of the quays the environmental design put in to those buildings was minimal and ended up ruining what could of been a busy vibrant getaway for alot of sheffielders but people don't realise there is anything there because of these large businesses

I work in the CIQ and it's all about the Cultural Industries! There's lost of places like the Shrowroom, Red Tape studios, Jennic, Zoo and us (Sheffield Technology Parks) there, although we're helping to support the Creative and Digital Sector. You'll find a load of creative companies in the CIQ.
I guess you just have to know where to look!

Last time I saw a report about the CIQ it said that over 3,500 jobs had been created in the Workstation and buildings around there - not bad, considering that when it started people said that no jobs at all would be created and it would be a waste of time.

3500 jobs?
Wow....can you point me at the report?
Reason I ask is that I used to have offices in the Science Park in the late 1990s, and quite a few of the jobs there would have existed without teh CIQ - they'd have just been spread out.
It's a good idea, though!

If I didn't work in it, then I really wouldn't know. Apparently Sheffield is full of "quarters". More than 4 it would seem....

Can't find a specific reference to that report off hand, but this page:
http://www.ciq.org.uk/about.php?page=about&name=ciq
says "300 companies" and "several thousand new jobs" in the area

JoeP,
Which company in the 'Science Park?' Is that the one on Arundel Street or the Uni? Cos it's now Sheffield Technology Parks and we alone have over 25 companies based here now!

I had an office on Arundel Street - just a tiny consulting compnay. Folded up eventually.
I think that it's a great idea but I wish that people would be more careful with saying that a particular initiative created x jobs.
Usually tehse initiatives aggregate jobs in to a particular are, which is great. But I don't know many entrepreneurs who say 'Well, I want to start a business but I'll wait until there's a Science Park / CIQ / technology Park and go there. I would have thought that people have a business, then move in, or woudl probably manage to work from home, etc. if incubation facilities weren't available.

I agree to a certain extent, but I also think that the creation of these areas encourages people who have the idea at the backs of their minds to go for it and set up their business as they know that there will be specialist support and advice availabe (which is what the CIQ as an organisation is there for, and similar organisations are in place in Manchester etc) as well as a certain amount of relevant trade passing from similar companies in the area.
certainly I'd be more inclined to set up a cultural industries related company within the CIQ, if not just for the convenience of having clients on the doorstep!

Given the nature of it perhaps one way to measure the value of the Cultural Industries Quarter is to list the high quality cultural content which has been created within the Cultural Industries Quarter or as a result of the existence of the Cultural Industries Quarter.

That will be non then.
As far as I'm aware, everything that has happened down there would have happened anyway. In fact, I personally believe that more would have happened if the CIQ Agency hadn't been created!
Did they stop Red Tape closing? Why are they meddling in the Park Hill Flats project which is way outside their remit and area? Why are they telling people that they don't want development down there?
They are thoroughly nice people though and do have good intentions. I just think they are a pointless Agency, and that the CIQ is pointless when it comes to regeneration. I can see how they help individual creative firms, but do they really need yet another bunch of publicly funded bods to do that?
