Can anyone offer me some advice or help????
My computer is a dell dimension 8100 about 3 yrs old, Intel pentium 4 384 Mb ram blah blah etc. I run windows xp pro and have a full version of mcafee protecting it. But it takes ages to start up! It used to run really quickly but not anymore. Its ok when its been up and running for about 30 mins i.e. loading internet pages (i'm on 2mb cable broadband too) and programmes but the initial start up is mega slow!!!!
Please can anyone help????????

dont use macafee, use a smaller, better, free av like avg
use spybot search and destroy and adaware to get rid of spyware
delete all tmp, old, bak files and stuff you dont need
uninstall any programs you dont need
delete cookies, internet files you dont need
use start/run/msconfig/startup and disable stuff that start at startup that you might not need.....sometimes it can be hard to know what to keep running and what to disable tho (as a guide anything that mentions your firewall or antivirus keep, things that relate to your motherboard mainly)

Have you checked for Spywear on your computer? You can use a programme called Ad-Aware to do this.

Have a look at Vidster's Tech Vault. It's run by a member from here and has some good PC housekeeping tips that might help you.

Thank you very much for your advice peeps, I've done all this but haven't had much success with it. I'll check out the Vidsters vault and see if that has anything new to offer. I appreciate your responses xxxxxxxxx

Sometimes a complete wipe and reinstall is called for. It makes an amazing difference.
