Save your efforts. Go outside and have a beer.

Depends what you want to achieve. If you just want to repaint it, then sand it until the shine is off the gloss, using a smooth sandpaper. If you want to get back to wood,i would use nitromors and plenty of striping and sanding.

I'd use a medium grade, until the shine has gone. Remember to undercoat in a colour appropriate to the gloss you're using. If you're changing from a dark to a light colour or vice versa then two coats of undercoat, with a fine grade sanding inbetween. Two coats of top coat

Sanding is tedious though - so if there aren't any lumps bumps or hairs in the existing gloss, I'd use a product such as ESP (easy surface prep) and save the elbow grease

Don't forget that if it's really old paint it might have lead in it. In that case best to use wetordry paper wet to keep the dust down or liquid paint stripper to go back to bare wood and start from scratch.

B&Q or any trade paint supplier should be able to provide you with it, or the same thing by a different name

It's great - it looks like water, goes on like water, and you just wipe it off after a few mins, leaving a good key for painting

If you can't get this stuff, there's something called 'problem solving primer' that will probably do the job too. I've used that on varnish, melamine and tiles with good results
