The reason Im asking is because as I was driving through today,I noticed A lovely little Church called Bethesda. My son married an American girl and lives in Bethesda,Maryland,U.S.A. I wondered if there was any connection between the two,as its spelt the same.

Sorry, can't help with the Bethesda chapel, but I think it is a common name, and you might find something about the name in an encyclopaedia.
But re SWALLOWNEST, anyone got any stories about the Swallownest Pavilion?

Don't know about Bethesda not being bothered about religion. I think that this was brought up if i think correctly in an earlier thread. Certainly should have something on the aston-Cum -Aughton or aston Parish websites. But Pavilion was reopened as a Snooker club at the begining of the 90's after being derelict for a while. In recent years part owned by Richard Stone.(Now Matthew Green 2010)

Anyone remember PC Brooks, always known as "Bobby" Brooks, from the mid 1950s when he was based in Swallownest, in the police house just up from the Pavilion, but on the opposite side of the road.

Bethesda, Maryland is an unincorporated area of the Montgomery County real estate market near Washington, D.C., retaining its old-fashioned charm but with a modern flare. The town is named for a local church, The Bethesda Presbyterian Church, built in 1820, which originates from a passage in the New Testament.

I was born in Swallownest - my ancestors being the Wasteney family.

I was born 1940 and left there in 1967 moving to Driffield near Bridlington, then on to living in Malaysia from the end of 2006

The Bethesda was there before the war, and is just another of the many variations on the christian religion, the other one I remember being the Weslyan Chapel near to the traffic lights. The congregation (my grandmother included) were followers of John Wesley, who preached around the area, particularly East Yorkshire. In the 30'2 40's 50's the organist was Harold Rose, who had the grocers shop on High Street. His son Haydn took over in later years, but then after selling the grocers shop to one of the "chains" he took a village shop and post office at Wickersly

My mother had a hairdressing shop on Aughton Road.

We went sledging every winter "down the hillies" which was a hill at the bottom of Alexndra Road, bike rides in summer to Roche Abbey and other places such as Ulley Brook to paddle in the stream.

Sunday morning walks with my grandfather, stopping at the Robin Hood pub in Aughton before going over the fields to the Royal Oak in Ulley village.

Matinees at the Pavillion Cinema, Magic Lantern shows in a side room at the Wesleyan Chapel, etc., etc..

And every one will remember Nell Greens (sort of emporium) on High Street, just below Park Street

I remember the "bobby, and others at the time, but the most well known was "bobby Stocking" who I think lived at Aston - whatever you were doing as a kid out playing he would catch you doing - used to ride up behind you on his bike and belt your ear - short sharp on the spot justice. Others were Bobby Woofinden, Bobby Lascelles that I can think of at the moment

Hope this starts a thread of more nostalgia

Best Wishes from Subang Jaya, near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

There was Bobby Brooks in the mid 1950s --he was a terrific man, one of the kindest I ever met. Re the Pavilion, the manager was Allan Lax.

Hello victormh, I think we may have a connection, my mothers name was Doris Mellor from Kiveton Park. I seem to remember my uncle Dr. William Mellor discussing the Wasteneys of Swallownest, also an Aunt Polly and family from Beighton. Am I on the right track?

I cannot remember anyone by the name of Mellor, but the Dr would probably have treated a number of Wasteneys after their marriages. In Kiveton Park were 3 of the daughters of Charlotte and Charles Wasteney. Married names being Annice Sayles, Hilda Cope, Phyllis Harrison. My Great Grandmother was Charlotte Wasteney and in her late years lived with Phyllis and her husband Charles. He built a bungalow with Charlottes money and a building at the side where he did joinery work. It was on the Wales side of the fields wherte the fair was held every year. Also the daughter of Ruth Wasteney (Ruth lived at Killamarsh) was Gwyneth Batty and she married a Kiveton guy - Ray Thorpe, if still alive they may live on Storth Lane.
Does this help you ?? - Grey Eminence - Victormh

Dear Redfyre

Reading your posts and details makes me think you are "a Swallownest Lad"
So I am wondering if I know you ? I was born 1940, went to Swallownest school 1945 to 1951, then to Woodhouse Grammar School. Lived in Swallownest until 1963 when I went to work in Manchester, then back from late 1964 until moving to Driffield in 1967. So I remember "old Swallownest", and even the Pavillion being open. Went during the week and Saturdays to the matinees and then walked home to Aughton Road whilst my grandfather went into Maggies for a couple of pints

Best Wishes - Victor Marshall Hutchinson - Subang Jaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
