I am a third year psychology undergraduate studying at Sheffield Hallam University and I am currently completing my final year project on emotional literacy in parents of children with autism. Unfortunately I am desperate for participants and was wondering if anybody here would be interested in participating. I am looking for mums and dads who have a child on the autistic spectrum. If you would like further information or would like to participate feel free to pm me! Many thanks!

Hey,

I know it's the other university in town, but it may be worth getting in touch with Sheffield Uni's psychology department as they have a research team there that work with autistic children, and presumably their families as well.

Good Luck!

Hiya thanks for that I'll have a look on the web. I didn't have any idea they have a research centre!

Do you know there is a specialist school for pupils with Autism in Thurnscoe? Maybe they could help with your questionnaires/interviews/study.

BTW - how do you find psychology at Hallam? I'd love to do a conversion course (I've already got a degree but it didn't have enough psychology in it to register) and I think they do them there - would love to go into educational psychology though I fear, so would many others!

Thanks for that drp215, I'll ask my supervisor if it would be ok to contact them. Psychology at Hallam isn't bad, the lecturers are all pretty knowledgeable in their own field and most of the modules have been interesting. Only downside is the awful admin, the organisation side has been non existent. Work of mine has gone missing, you will be lucky if you get feedback, oh, and they have only just told us they are bringing our dissertation hand in dates forward by three weeks! But apart from this the uni is great, all the facilities are fab they just need to employ better admin staff (plus they are so rude, think "computer says no" woman off of Little Britain-you get the idea!)

Hiya Taylor1

The study is looking at emotional literacy in parents of children with autism and involves you filling out a short questionnaire. This will be done postally and you will be given a SAE to return it. Your name will not be recorded on the questionnaire so all your data will remain confidential.

If you would like to take part in the study I will need you to send me your address so that I can send you the questionnaire. You can either PM me or email me at Lucy.A.Smith2@student.shu.ac.uk (but for obvious reasons please don't post your address on the forum!)

If you have any other questions feel free to contact me!

Many thanks for all your help!

Hi hallam girl,

have you tried approaching Prof Tantam for your study....i'm sure that you're aware that he is an internationally renowned expert in asperger's but think also knows a lot about autism as well.

He may know of potential clients for you or may be able to direct you in the right direction.

Hope this helps

Hallam Girl I just PMd you.

I have asperger's myself, but my Dad might be interested in doing your survey.

Does he work at Hallam? I haven't even heard of him, but to be honest I haven't done that much reading around Aspergers so that might be the reason. Thanks for the suggestion anyways!

If you contact Ryegate Centre in Sheffield, they may be able to give you information or contacts. I think the person to ask for is Jane Williams. Good luck!

To all

Thanks for your suggestions they are proving very useful! I really appreciate it as sample size can make the results far more accurate. If anybody else has any suggestions feel free to keep them coming!

I know someone else who might be able to help... Contact the Sheffield branch of Thorne House services for Autism on 2545728 any time between 9.30 AM and about 4.30 PM weekdays and they may be able to help you.

If you ring, ask for Becky or Jackie and tell them Richard sent you.

Hi, The Rowan School on Furniss Avenue in Dore is a specialist school for autistic kids. King Ecgbert School (my old comprehesive!) also has a specialist unit called 'The Resource' (see http://www.kesresource.org.uk/), which is simply brilliant. Conveniently, this school is also on Furniss Avenue and the number 97a bus drops you right outside!
Hope this helps,
