A coppice is a managed area of woodland... Scholes coppice doesnt actually refer to the tower, but some nearby land.
Keppels Column (the tower itself) is a folly of one of the aristocratic types from Wentworth Woodhouse.. If I remember correctly, Keppel was an Admiral friend of the Marquess... not sure if there was something about treason in the story as well, lots of intrigue surrounding the Wentworth Estates...

Keppel was first tried and acquitted 1779, and then Palliser was also tried and acquitted. Keppel was ordered to strike his flag in March 1779.
A column was built in the late 18th century to commemorate his acquittal, commissioned in 1778 by Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham and designed by John Carr.

I've added a bunch of the most relevent links to my post up there ^^
I've done afair bit of researching into the area (a few years ago) in particular Wentworth Woodhouse and it's chequered history
Some info about the Follys in the area here: http://www.inkamera.ukgo.com/wfolly/
Hoober Stand and the mausoleum are open to the public occasionally I think...

Just had a quick look at your link and this sentence stood out:

Keppel's Column is in a field behind the bungalows in Admiral's Crest off Upper Wortley Road (A629) and accessible on foot or on horseback.
|
On horseback?! What century was this webpage last updated? Last time I went there as a schoolkid we took a coach.
