By the looks of the flashing orange lights, I'd guess it was someone pulling out from the Howbrook junction.
There are a lot of accidents at that staggered crossroads between High Green and Howbrook, I wouldn't be surprised to see traffic lights there some time in the future.

I arrived at the McD roundabout at approx 4:40, and the police car was blocking the A61 exit towards Sheffield.
By the time I had re-routed via Chapeltown and was travelling down Halifax Rd, near Lidl, at about 5:00, an ambulance with a police escort and blue lights passed me. I presume it was on the back of this accident. If so, I hope whoever was injured makes a full recovery.
Although we do not know what happened in this case, I do agree that the Howbrook junction is hazardous.
During road works a couple of years ago, the exit from Howbrook was temporarily made into a left turn only (although some people ignored it). At the time I thought that there was a case for making it permanent, to remove one of the hazards.
Edit. Oops, the times above should read 3:40 and 4:00, not 4:40 and 5:00.
