Was thinking of going to the cinema to watch this film but was told its part of a trilogy and initially until i googled i wasnt sure whether this was the 1st, 2nd or 3rd part (didnt want to watch it and not understand what was going on if it wasnt the 1st part).
Anyway, as i googled ive noticed all 3 films have already been out in 2009 (different director). So now im confused..... Unusual for same storylined film to be out twice in 2 years. Ive not read the books so can someone clarify? Was the 2009 films foreign or something?

The original are subtitled Scandinavian films - although on dvd you can have them in English language.
Big ears- sorry Mr Craig won't be able to compete against the original in my opinion, although i will probably still go to see it.

I really enjoyed the original film, so was dismayed to hear about an American version. But it has had pretty good reviews so might nip along to see it.
To the OP, the story stands alone, no need to know anything about the books or other films. Just go and enjoy.

But the girl with the dragon tattoo is the first in the trilogy isnt it? They must follow on a bit or they wouldnt be a trilogy. e.g. same characters at least.

The books on which the trilogy are adapted are considered part of a trilogy, although Dragon Tattoo can stand alone as a story on its own quite easily.
The new film adaptation, with Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara is an English language adaptation of the first book (and a brutally solid adaptation too), directed by David Fincher.
I love the Scandinavian adaptation, and also love the new version. Definitely worth seeing both.

On the Mayo/Kermode show Daniel Craig said that he hoped they would, but it all depended on the success of this one.

The first film has a standalone story, 2 and 3 sort of run together.

Just got back. A very good film although i felt it could have been shortened 10 minutes or so which seemed to be what a lot of people have reviewed. My wife however hates rape scene and loves cats, so wasnt impressed although liked the storyline.

I'd concur with that, as with the books. - although there are throwbacks to the first story how the plotline and the characters pan out. There are references to the first story in 2 and 3 (or should that be 2 and 2-a ?) as well as the carry-over of the main characters.
I've not seen the films, (in either language) so I could not say how closely the plot of the films follows the books.
I did enjoy reading the books, (although the violence, I found, made me feel very uncomfortable).
I was told that Larsson intended at least one more book to follow "Millennium III", but sadly he died before that could come to fruition.
