Hey. The keyboard has aquired water damage, now doesn't work. The repair time and charge is pretty high from where I bought it, since having loads of car issues this week also, I'm on the edge lol.

Would anyone know if I could just replace the keyboard? assuming there is no more damage to the motherboard? (There is a plastic film over the motherboard, so hopefully not)

Speaking to a HP support fella, he said, a replacement keyboard simply wouldnt work, and that it would have to be done by PC world (Where I got it from) Personally I'm no good with laptops, but thankfully my mother does.

I also have another HP laptop, but I'm guessing the the keyboard from that wont work on this, for the mean time.

Everything else is working just fine, the mouse pad and so on.

Any help would be huuuuugely appreciated

You can just get a cheap USB keyboard for now. You can also use the on screen keyboard although getting to it depends on what version of windows you are running..... Usually start button, programs, accessosies and ease of access.

If your other laptop is the same model then the keyboard should be the same so you could swap them.

The lengthier option is to order a replacement keyboard online (will be around £10-£15 on ebay) but with the xmas post it'll take a while to arrive I'd imagine.

Keyboards are one of the easier things to replace on a laptop with a youtube tutorial. It's the same procedure for the vast majority of laptops.

Just be 100% sure that it's dry before turning it on though. If not, remove the power cable and battery and stick it somewhere warm for a few hours.

Well, the technician I took it too today had no quarms with turning it on, been left in my warm room for about...12 hours I'd say, with battery and wire out. The lad at HP said that even a replacement keyboard for that laptop would work? I don't see why not, I don't mind waiting as I have an older laptop I can just get by with now.

I'm no technical wizard so excuse me if I sound stupid at any point, but there is no other damage, and there were one or two droplets of liquid under the keyboard on the sheet metal like surface. Wouldn't there be issues with the computer coming on and such if the motherboard was effected? Bloody thing is less than 2 week old too!

Have you got a spare desktop keyboard that you can plug into the laptop?

Just to be sure here. Did they say it would or wouldn't work?

I've replaced loads of laptop keyboards in my time and they've all worked fine so long as the laptop still works after the damage.

He said it wouldn't work. That's what confused me also, I always thought, unlike desktop PC's keyboards didn't have to be...installed, as such. I'm gunna speak to the fella in Direct Computers tomorrow since I work near there...and I've used him before, and he was great to get a good idea of what I should be doing.

It sounds silly but, sending it for the repair is the very last thing I want to do. £50 for the repair charge + the extra parts it will require, + the 1 month waiting time isn't very attractive to me right now...annoying since the machine is only 2 weeks old tomorrow.

Yeah, thanks. I already watched that, cleaned the small drop, let it dry for a few hours, put it back together, and took it back again... I'm now posting from my brand new laptop
