Hi all!

I was thinking about commuting from Sheffield to north of Nottingham (Hucknall) for my 9-5. I was wondering how busy both the M1 and A61 are if I left Sheffield at 7.30 and left Nottingham at 17.00! Obviously these are rush hour times...

Any help would be fantastic

Merry Christmas!

I'd set off slightly later, leave it till about 8 AM, then by the time you get on the Motorway most of the traffic will have gone, in minimal traffic you can do Sheffield to Nottingham in 45 minutes easy.

I have just spent 2 year commuting between J31 and Queen's in Nottingham and I am very relieved its all over. It cost a fortune in fuel even though fuel in Nottingham is generally cheaper than in Sheffield for some bizarre reason There is a cheap Tesco fuel station on the A630 and their profits must have gone down since I stopped commuting! I was meant to be working a 9-5 but ended up leaving at 7am and would not be guaranteed to get there on time and then leaving after 6 to get home at the same time as I would had I left at 5. On a Friday it would take hours to get back and Monday mornings to get there were not much better. The summer holidays mid week 3/4 hour- 1 hour door to door Winter nearly 2 hours each way. I would never recommend it and would never do it again. It's wonderful to get my life back! Hope that helps

I commute daily to near the City Hospital in Nottingham. From Junction 32 approx one hour to destination or 45 Minutes to Hucknall via Junction 27. Return is an hour (or longer) depending on what time you leave. M1 generally bad from 27 to junction 29 in the evenings where it eases. Fridays tend to be bad coming north and Mondays bad going south.

Cannot say much about the effect of adjusting morning departure times as have to leave base about 06:50 to be sure of a parking space.

I work in Blidworth which is the next to to huckhall on , well near dam it on the a61 just from ravens head.

It takes me around an hour from here in s5 to Blidworth in the morning and about 45-50 mins return and that's 7:30 set of like you.

I go m1 34-31, a57 and turn off before B&Q to budby/ollerton ( beware this is the gay doggers haunt so not for everyone ), jump on the a614 through white post farm, turn off towards Blidworth bottoms ( again gay doggers so frequent this road ), through Blidworth turn left by the jet towards fishpool/ ravenshead, take the first left into ravenshead follow along till you get to q8 petrol and that's the a61 missing all the messy parts. From there it's 10mins to huckhall town centre if that.

What on earth have gay doggers got to do with travelling to Nottingham at rush hour? And to what extent will they affect your journey (providing you don't stop)

All I'm saying is its not hidden and if offended then keep away from these roads. It's very very open in every layby around budby and Blidworth. Plenty of men eating hotdogs but no burger vans in sight if you know what I mean.

I used to work in and around Nottingham at one time but its so long ago now that I'm sure there are more horses and carriages on the road now than there were then, so it's probably irrelevant.

First, the good news is, you don't have to go into Nottingham - you're well north of it. So these tales on here of dreadful commutes, though true, don't apply to you.

You've really got 2 choices I suppose. Take the M1 south from Sheff and stick to it until J27 - the Hucknall junction, or jump off the M1 and J29 and go down the back lanes.

If traffic is flowing well then obviously the motorway is going to be your quickest bet. I'd suggest you'd need to allow 45 mins from Sheff Centre to Hucknall going out along the Parkway to J33. Depends where in Sheff you are starting from though eh?

If traffic is slow then you could turn off at J29 and head towards Mansfield, taking a right turn about 1 mile from the motorway towards Pleasley. Then it's Skegby, Sutton, Kirby, Ravenshead and Hucknall - all cross country. You'll not see much traffic on them roads but be careful as some of it is single track with bends. I'd still say about 45 mins that way as well. Try it - do a dry run or two first. Might be an idea to wait until the schools are back so you get the best idea of how busy it will be.

Many thanks, I shall indeed have a few trial runs, but good to know that it shouldn't take a massive amount of time! I will give myself 1 1/2 hours the first few times I do this based on your own experiences! Don't want to be late for the new job!

Thank you once again!

Hi
I work in north Nottingham at the business park just off junction 26... Takes me about 40mins on average from S20 (junction 30). I rarely have any problems but as a previous poster said, allow more time on Monday mornings and certainly don't make plans before 7pm on a Friday night! Traffic can be a nightmare at those times. As a rule of thumb to arrive at work for 8am ill leave my house (10mins from j30) at 7.10-7.15am and for 9am I leave anywhere up to 8.25am as traffic tends not to be so bad at that time. I used to work at the Uni of Sheffield and find the commute down to Notts much easier/quicker as go nowhere near either city centre. Only down side is the cost. Good luck!

You've never driven past junction 31-28 during the morning if you think most of the traffic will have gone...
