I was talking to a man from Wakefield who had worked in the building trade.
He said that fellow workers from Sheffield were known as 'dee dars'.
I have never come across this term.
Can anyone throw any light on it?

I think it refers to Sheffielders saying dee and daa instead of thee and tha. I've not heard that many people talking like that though.

It never fails to amaze me how people from Wakefield and Barnsley dare mock anyone else's accent.
They are practically unintelligle, themselves.

I had no idea that anyone in Wakefield would use the term, but Notts and Derbys people use it, in relation to Yorkshire people, and more specifically Sheffield (as those are the closest Yorkshire men and women to Notts and Derbys) as old Yorkshire accents had a lot of 'thee' and 'thars'... Have to say that I haven't really met Sheffield people who talk like this, but it's just mickey taking... Heard that accent more when you get to Barnsley and above...

You have a bit of a cheek mocking people for being "unintelligle" when the actual word is unintelligible..
