Does anyone recall The Ark at Crookesmoor / Upperthorpe?
It was a sort of youth club back in the mid to late sixties where I spent many a good night dancing to Ska, Reggea and Soul music.
Although underage me and my mates used to pop out to the nearby Scarborough Arms for a pint. You had to have your hand stamped if you wished to re-enter the Ark without paying again.

Yeah, I loved the Ark. A gang of us used to go up from Meynell YC and dance till we dropped. It was my first introduction to Northern Soul.
If I remember rightly it was a sort of alcohol free pub for 15-18 year olds. They used to stamp your hand as well, as you rightly pointed out. It was a badge of status for the next few days
The dJ would always have competitions like "First person to bring me a pair of knickers!!" (Susan Atherton usually won)
Great days indeed.
I guess the nearest they have now is Kiddy Corp on a saturday

Hi Bushbaby
It's nice to know that the place is fondly remembered by others.
Did you know Barry Schofield? I beleive that he at one time frequented Meynell YC and it was he who introduced me to The Ark.

Name doesn't ring a bell Ken, but there was a big crowd from Meynell. Names I do remember are Frankie Sheehan, John Daubney, The Athertons (Phil, Angie and Little Avo) and a few of the Crowleys too
I can remember the police raiding it for overcrowding but Mick Jackson the DJ allways got wind off it and half the crowd disapeared out of the back door before they arrived. When the Ark closed me and Mick whent on to DJ at Eversley House (now the Office) in Upperthorpe and Highway 61 down Heeley.
