Can any of you astronomy buffs tell me what I saw this morning.

In the garden at half light this morning - around 6.45 a bright star or planet?
low in the western sky.

Thanks

Chris

It was Venus - also known as the morning star.

Useful site above - set your time etc

Also interesting for the Space station spotters - if you are awake early at the moment!

I think you're quite right - the OP said west and Venus rises in the east.
That's a great little website, thanks for pointing it out.

The brightest object over the western horizon at that time would have been Jupiter.

Most UFOs will indeed be on the sky map; more than half of them turn out to be Venus, Mars or Jupiter and thus become identified objects.

It was probably the newly launched Chinese Space Station transforming into a ICBM weapons platform, targeting all of the Western countries...

...Probably.

I'd also recommend SkyView which has information about many of the objects and superimposes pictures to show how, for instance, the constellation of Cancer represents a crab so you can finally work out what those mushroomed-up Greeks were on about.

To be pedantic if we know what they are they can harldy be classed as "unidentified"..

That's exactly the point. The vast majority of unidentified objects are commonplace objects that the viewer simply cannot identify. ChrisM66 saw a UFO himself this morning; he posted this thread in order to identify it.
