i need to send some mail to a military BFPO address, but have never done so before and want to make sure i get the address format correct.. the address i have been given* is:

Cpl John Smith 9876 J1 MOD Support Troop HQ MND (SE) OP Telic BFPO 999

how should i write this on the envelope? this link cites the following for personal mail:

Number, Rank, Name
Unit/Department
Exercise/Op ..........
BFPO Number

does this translate to:

9876 Cpl John Smith
J1 MOD Support Troop
HQ MND (SE)
OP Telic
BFPO 999

you lot always seem like a knowledgeable bunch, so i thought i'd ask here

ta.

* = obviously all details have been changed, but that's the exact format/syntax i received the address in

That used to be the way it was written when I was in the army but that was a long time ago.

Yes, things don't change very fast in H M Forces so it's probably still the same.

That was the way things were addressed to me when I was in the Navy not so long ago. So yeah, that looks fine.

Even if it's not perfect, it'll get there as long as you have the main information on it.

The BFPO number tells which camp or base they are stationed at so they know from the number which base it is going to.
Support troup tells which unit they are attached to and where on the base they are if I remember correctly.
Hope this helps.

Correct. That will post it to somewhere in London, who will then have it sent over (to in-theatre place, won't name it)

It's surprisingly fast as well.

I think it still goes to the BFPO sorting office and into the appropriate sack. Depending on where the unit is at the moment it can be very quick, obviously if they are on a ship in the South Atlantic it can take a while to catch up!
