Norton Internet Security is excellent. It's nothing like Norton used to be.
It's fast, light on resources and damned near impossible to get anything through (Even with thousands of infected files to test them with).

AVG Internet Security is complete garbage now. Bloated, resource heavy and lets quite a bit of malware through.
Panda have improved no end though, but it isn't as good as Norton.
F-Secure is very good, as is GData, but both are very heavy on resources and will slow systems down.

Avast is a very good program. Been using it a long time with no problems whatsoever.

Norton is fine, good for beginners to a point. You'll likely find overall that the system is slightly more responsive with Norton - but protection wise I'd stick with Kaspersky (and get a key cheap from eBay) especially if you're happy with it. Both rate well in various tests.
OTOH as others have discussed, no need to pay when there are free alternatives like MSE & Avast. Also Avira, which has probably the best antivirus engine around - but some controversy surrounding it's commercial alliances lately.

F-Secure takes up more memory than some, but in itself that doesn't mean it slows things down. Ran perfectly fine on my netbook when I trialled it for 3 months, better even than Avast which I took off early.
Can read the AV-C tests (from December 2010) of which antivirus software affect the performance of the computer the least:

I always use this one now.
Some people prefer something with more options, but for me this does the job with the minimum of fuss.

Use whatever works best for you. Generally speaking, Avast, Avira AntiVir and MSE are all good free ones. AVG is not as good as it used to be. Some people will stand by free AV, some will prefer paid versions. But in my opinion, you don't need to pay for AV as there are plenty of free ones that do the job well. But at all costs, avoid McAfee - please.
