Yesteday travelling along the A629 and where it drops to a 40 (where you can turn onto the Bypass) I see a sneaky camera van sat there waiting to get you slowing from 60 to 40.
Yes I know you should be doing 40 when you hit the 40, but I thought these cash cows were only meant to be in areas that have high accident rates?? I'm pretty sure I have never seen an accident on that stretch of road.
Coincidence he chose the section just where it drops from a 60 to a 40?? I think not. Sneaky *******!!

Can you be a bit more specific as to where this is?
I hate sneaky camera vans.

It's not at all sneaky though is it. It's a bloody great van. If you can't see it then you shouldn't be driving.

My prediction for the rest of this thread:
All the cyclists, pedestrians, people with no licenses, people with slow cars/vans, and people with no licenses, as well as people who have been affected by speed = member of family/friend etc killed all on the SLOW DOWN band wagon
All the rest = I hate speed cameras as the police profit etc..
End of thread
Btw, thanks for heads up

It was sitting on the bridge that goes over the Stocksbridge Bypass( http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Stocks...39.82,,0,10.64), Yes you can see it, but by sneaky I mean trying to catch people out who are decelerating down to 40.
I'm fine as I am well aware they like to sit in these positions, and if people get caught, they have no one but themselves to blame. But if they are going to label these vans as saftey vans, then maybe they should sit in areas where they are actually required(suppose that wouldn't return the same revenue), and not on stretches of road with very good visibilty and a very low accident rate.
The other thing I find bemusing is why have saftey vans on roads which have fixed speed cameras?

They are scurrying around trying all ways these days to make a few bob as so many cameras have been decommisioned in recent times.

I thought all speed camera locations were advertised these days? It's hardly being sneaky if it's location has been published.

See above.
Still sneaky, not as bad as the little grey box's at the side of the road when the van is hidden around the corner (Cookswood road is a regular for this one).
If they were saftey vans as they like to advertise them as then why not have them in high collision areas and not areas where speed limits change??

Are you sure that that road hasn't had accidents on it?

Are you seriously intending to suggest that they should try to catch people out where they won't be breaking the speed limit?

I frequent that road a fair bit and have never seen an accident where it drops from the 60 to 40.

No I suggest they go where there are accident hot spots, not clear stretches of road with changing speed limits in the hope they catch someone out.

There should be two criteria, one that a higher than expected number of accidents have occurred on a stretch of road, and two, that the accidents were caused by excessive speed.
Otherwise it's not a safety camera, but a revenue camera.
If there's a road know for speeding but there are no accidents, then the speed limit should be revised as it's clearly safe to go faster than the posted limit.

It's already been done. Under a central government requirement, very recently all local authorities had to carry out assessments of actual speeds on all their routes to see whether the speed limits were appropriate and indicate any changes needed where they proved not to be.

I've yet to see a road limit upped though.

I have only seen limits go one way and that was down. Penistone road for example, there is no need for this to be a 30, this should be a minimum 40.

My recollection was that this was included in Sheffield's speed limit review, but the costs of doing it are quite high and transport funding is very tight at the moment.
