Just drove past the Gypsy Queen near Peaks and it's all boardered up, benches stacked up the lot.

Obviously it's shut down but does anyone know why? And is it only temporary?

Very true, also hope they reopen with better staff, who don't have an attitude like the one's before it shut.

It reopens today, and on some days (sorry can't remember which) kids eat for a £1.

Wife and I went in the Hungry Horse on Saturday night, something that won't be repeated in a hurry. The Gypsy Queen used to be a good pub, what on earth are they thinking of with this 'Hungry Horse' business? Thousands of kids racing about, children's amusement machines in the restaurant area, discarded food all over the floor, obnoxious drinkers behaving boisterously. I suppose they have pitched their clientele at the Pie and Pint for £4.99 brigade. We moved on to the Milestone, where the manager was clearly drunk, although the atmosphere was more convivial that the Gypsy Queen.

I had the same experience there too and wouldn't go back.

However there's nothing wrong with the "Pie&Pint for £4.99 type of pub" in general. The Broadfield on Abbeydale Rd does that kind of thing (I think it's burger&pint for £4.99 there) but it's fine as a pub with a great landlady, good beer and decent simple food.
I suspect that the problem isn't because the Gypsy Queen is pitching at the £4.99 brigade, it's because it's pitching at kids.

Very true! I've nothing against the pie and pint pubs, but that seems to be all there is these days. No quality, just junk food pubs warming up Brake Brothers processed portioned meals! Sherwood is the same. I remember visiting a Hungry Horse in Hereford around 10 years ago, similar experience even back then. The Hungry Horse chain were the people who were condemed for serving the Zebu meat when diners thought they were getting beef. An 8oz steak at £3.95 says everything

Well when I went to Gypsy Queen I thoroughly enjoyed the food (especially the ribs) and the staff were fine, I also drove a minibus of twirlies there for lunch and they had a fine old time.

OK, but you weren't there on Saturday night then ... broken bottles scattered across the car park, discarded food scattered across the floor, kids running amok etc

No, they are all pretty bad! Probably the best one though is the Mossbrook.

The only problem with the Gypsy Queen as far as I could see was the queue at the bar and empty bottles and glasses on tables and window sills. I didn't see many kids running around, other than the play area, but some of the kids sitting down were a bit noisy. I didn't see any food on the floors and no bottles broken or otherwise in the carpark.

Been several times, including Saturdays, and food was really good and we'll be going again
