Well, Tilly is about 2 weeks way from giving birth to what seems a bazillion puppies. She is so fat. I mean SOOOOOO fat.

She already loks like a seal that swallowed a walrus, and she still has two weeks to go.

I know I shouldn't be as excited as I am as I needto drop her off at the breeders on the 6th. AHHHH - what will I do, I'll be without my little darling for a couple of months. Whats worse - how will my O/H survive without her?

Poor wee thing.

NEW PHOTOS ON LAST PAGES

Tilly has had her puppies -

I'm confused too...even if not a 'breeder'...why let your 'family pet' have her pups birth at a strangers house, (whether you're keeping the pups or not, breeding, not breeding, selling or whatever), surely it would be kinder to her to have them in her 'safe' environment where she's settled and happy??
Are we not getting the full story....?? Is there a serious reason she needs to go to a Breeder for birthing?? Just wondering, because I've never come across that before.

If you're not a breeder than why have you bred your dog?

I couldn't bare to be away from my dog if they were giving birth. I couldn't think of anything worse!

Also moving her to the breeders a week before she is due to give birth isn't a very good thing for the dog. It will cause her stress and could cause complications.

You should know that small dogs can give birth a week before the due date and is very common. So if she is due on the 14th she can give birth from the 7th and you're only taking her on the 6th! She might give birth a day after arriving there which doesn't give her any time to settle in or get comfortable.

I know I wouldn't put my dog through that stress whether she knew the breeder well or not.

It's not at all uncommon for people to do this. Breeders will sell some of their favourite pups on the agreement that when/if appropriate they can breed from said dog to continue their line. At the breeder's house, there are knowledgeable people available for if there are any problems during whelping and the breeder will have all the appropriate equipment.

All that said, it's not something I could do either - part with any of my pets for a couple of months when they're at their most vulnerable...

Good luck and hope all goes well.

My auntie has a miniature English bull terrier, and on agreement, she is required to take her to the breeder (in Leeds) to be bred, where she stays for 2 weeks. She then comes home to have the pups (although I'm sure the breeder would keep her there to do so if my Auntie would rather not and didn't feel capable), and the breeder gets 2 pups which are pick of the litter.

She got the bitch at the much reduced price of £300 with this agreement, and if she has 5 or 6 pups, she gets to keep 3 or 4 to sell for herself. The pups are still registered with original breeders kennel name.

I remembered seeing this, from Scozzie on another thread

Quote:
My little Tilly Billy is due to have pedigree puppies in July and I cant wait. I'm not breeding them though, the breeder I got her from is having the puppies, so sadly, I wont have any little bundles of joy to play with.

She'd had so many offers on Tilly after she'd already agreed to sell her to me, and she is an unusual colour (not 'rare' colour - difinitely breed standard). I know the breeder has a waiting list for puppies and she does thorough checks. She doen't allow people to come and pick the puppies up, she delivers them herself, even if it is to John O'goats or Lands End!!

I totally agree with Evei and Strix - don't tar all breeders with the same brush.
The breeder sounds very very responsible, and Tilly is an unusual colour, so will have been wanted to carry on the lines. I'm sure she would be in great hands, and Scozzie wouldn't be doing this unless they knew that Tilly and her pups will be very well cared for. Its not like Tilly will be 'abandoned' I'm sure Scozzie will be making regular visits, and she will be coming home when her pups have gone. Doing it this way, rather than trying to do it yourself with no experience, might well be better. Especially in breeds that are known to have whelping difficulties (not sure if Dachshunds do)

thank you.

that is exactly it. Tilly visits the breeder regularly and loves playing with her former pack, so she is no stranger to the location, the house, the people or the dogs. we also board her there when we go away (overnight trips for weddings etc, before anyone jumps on my for 'abandoning' her)
She wasn't going to sell Tilly, but in the end, she wasn't going to be a winner in the show ring, so we bought her when she was 7 months.
It is actually very good timing as the O//H and I will be going to Australia in a couple of months for 3 weeks, so she will stay on at the breeders for as long as the puppies need her.

Golly, I wasn't expectng abuse and insults when I posted this.

I think you should all stop typing before thinking and actually look at Scozzie's previous posts. I know her personally and she adores Tilly, and she is doing what she feels is best to ensure she is in EXPERIENCED hands during the whelping and after. Scozzie could have easily gone out to another stud, mated Tilly and had her litter at home, but with Tilly being the size of dog she is its awfully difficult to help them if they get into trouble unless you know exactly what you are doing!

Give Tilly good luck cuddles from me, I can't wait to see what she has

I think a lot of people just don't realise that these systems are in place at all. If the breeder hadn't intended to sell Tilly, and was originally keeping her for breeding and/or showing, but changed their mind for some reason, it is quite common practice. I guess most people just don't acquire their dog in this circumstance, and so are never approached with the offer. I wouldn't personally like to part with my dog (or not get to be 'granny' to the pups ), but if this is what is best for you and Tilly, as well as her pups, then theres nothing wrong with it

I'm sure tilly will be in good hands and I'm guessing scozzie isn't just completely abandoning her, just leaving her care to someone more knowledgeable and experienced.

Not something I'd do either (well I wouldn't breed at all) but saying stuff like she can't be bothered etc seems very unfair.
Thank you.
It is true, I have no interest in raising pups. I've had bitches on breeders terms before, but they are terms that are worked out well before the mum is even due in season.

If Tilly needs to go to the vet, then the breeder will take her to (the breeders) regular vet who she has been using for all her dogs, and through any troubles births. They are experienced, and there is demand for the line.

I was expecting demands for a fat little waddler.

People are also assuming that the breeder is a stranger, but, as Scozzie says, Tilly was bought at 7 months old, and so Scozzie hasn't had her since 8 weeks like most people who purchase a pup from a breeder, and as posted, she makes regular visits to the breeder too. I'm sure she is almost as comfortable there as she would be at home, with the added safety net of knowledge and experience thrown in for her and the pups

I'm so hiding in Peaches' handbag on this day

Good luck to Tilly, I really hope everything goes well for her and the fact that she won't be having the pups with you is no excuse for a lack of PHOTOS

agree with littlemermaid i want pic's now. I was looking for my pic's of poppy when she was about to have her's she looked like she ate a beach ball but i can't find em. I know Tilly is quite happy staying where she was born an spent the first bit of her life an would have been glad of the same help and reassurance as you have had from your breeder. I will also need pic's of the pup's but don't ever let me touch one as i might never let go. Good luck Tilly my thought's are with you.
