Hi everyone,

I came out with a grade D at GCSE in Maths but most employers are looking for at least a C in Maths, and when I come to applying for jobs, the Maths grade lets me down. I did fine in every other subject, but I'm just looking for a place where I can possibly resit GCSE Maths. I know colleges are an option doing night classes or whatever, but what are the other options?

If you don't want to attend college to do a resit, you can sometimes sit as an independent candidate. You need to find a centre that will accept you and then study independently or with a tutor, pay the fee and then all you have to do is turn up on the day of the exam and take it.

The problem with this is that there are not many centres that accept private candidates. One that does is north star uk at Dronfield. They do CIE Igcses there. Some private schools will also accept independent candidates.

To be honest though college is probably the easiest option.

My sister resat her GCSE Maths at college, whilst doing other courses too.

When I was at school, there were a few students who had been in the year above me resitting their's whilst I was doing mine, not sure of the circumstances though.

Assuming you are no longer in education, my first port of call would be to phone up the maths department of your old school, even if they are not listed as accepting private candidates. Assuming you left on good terms, they may well be happy to help you or at least advise you where else you could go for help.

I sat a nightcourse at Castle college a few years back, GSCE maths. Although I had a C previously, I saw the course for about £40 and thought I'd give myself a second chance at it. Be advised, nights after a hard day at work are not the best time for concentrating! Good luck.

My OH did his gcse equivalents at our local school at night. He then received a voucher for doing them. I think the course was free if on benefits but about £40 if not. I know you can do these at local community centres
