It's my birthday in a few days, and as part of finally growing up and many other reasons, I have decided to give up all alchohol for a year and try to raise some money for the Childrens Hospital.
No Beer for a year
My endeavour is to update the page every day for the next 12 months, but that is where I may have a problem. It might get tiresome talking about the same old things day in day out, so i'm after some help for idea's on what to write about, maybe anyone might want to join me on this little journey?
I'll explain why i'm doing it
1) I want to get fit again
2) I owe the SCH big time after they saved my daughter's life several times, now she's a happy healther 2 year old
3) Could do with saving the money
I'm looking for contributers, maybe people who have done similar, have a story of their own etc? I'm sure there are loads of people out there who could help me so if you can, please take a look round the site and feel free to get in touch with me, or comment on this thread!

Good luck salmonbones, you'll certainly save some money and lose some weight providing you eat carefully. I did it for three months a few years ago and lost over a stone and saved a few bob.

Are you gonna celebrate your 34th with a pub crawl?
Good luck anyhow.

Good luck mate. Maybe after a year, you might be able to give it up alltogether. For me it's easy; I'm not a drinker and will RARELY drink. If out quite simply I wont give in to the pressure of everyone else drinking.
You don't need to drink out to have a good time, and the whole culture of getting bladdered is quite pathetic. If you don't even remember what you did the day after, then it was pointless going out in the first place.
What you could do on your blog if you run out of day to day things to write about, is write about past things, interesting stories, stuff you have herd from other people, things you're interested in...
To be honest though I am not really sure if people actually read personal blogs any more, that kind of thing seems to have died out, mostly being replaced with web 2.0 content such as social networking. Blogs now are mostly used for hobby sites, tech sites etc.
Good luck on your endeavor though, just remember that the main thing is not to give in to peer pressure, stand your ground and be your own person.

I have had 6 month spells off to lose weight and get fit and it the willpower required certainly enhances your self respect and respect from others. It gets hard when you're surrounded by boozy mates of course but you have to tell yourself that the price you pay in terms of calories is too high for a few hours fun.

I did 9 months abstainance when I was pregnant followed by another 5 of virtual abstainance whilst breast feeding. It is very hard when those around you are still hitting the sauce, but that first glass afterwards never tasted better.

I did something like this to this 5ys ago to raise money for a cancer hospital with 8 friends. I thought it was going to be hard has i loved drinking with friends plus i found it hard to get drunk, but i found giving up drinking easy, even when i go out now with friends i drink diet coke, also one other friend who did it with us also gave up, and 5ys on we both still not touch a drop, but now i am addicted to diet coke. OK i have alcohol free wine when it is xmas time so i blend in with the family at dinner, but i not missed it one bit, i now seen going out now having a good time without drink is just has good has going out with people drinking.
Good luck if you'r will power will take it then you will be fine and do it, Dont let anyone try to temp you into drinking, you need good freinds that know what you'r doing and respect you'r wish not to drink in the time you wish to do so.

A worth cause, good luck!
Personally I think not drinking would be a lot easier if pubs had a better selection and better priced alcohol free drinks. When you're mostly limited to a nasty post mix coke or a sickly sweet bottle of god knows what (J2O type things) for same or more money than a pint it's no wonder people chose the booze!

Without a doubt. However I think I will take it easy, and i'll make sure it's bitter i'm drinking. No gassing up on rubbish lager and strictly low volume or I won't last more then an hour or so!

As has my wife. And I confess, although I tried - I did not match her willpower during her pregnancy. That's why I'm not asking her to join me in this.
You've actually given me food for thought. If anyone reading this is pregnant right now, i'd love an interview (probably only over email if that's ok) so I can include your thoughts on the blog. I watch that program called one born every minute and really squirm with some of the girls on there, so would love to get the aspect of an unborn childs health across too.

I gave up for three months whilst in an alcohol detox facility if that counts?
Cost me £6,500!
It would have been cheaper to carry on drinking!
Thresher's must have thought it was Christmas on the day of my release!
Three months of having the 'twelve steps' and 'God' hammered into your brain every day would turn even the most teetotal into raving alcoholics!
That was over three years ago. After a brief relapse, I'm now very much in control of things without God's help.

Good luck. You may find that after, say a month that beer is 'so not part' of your life that you dont miss it. The longer you go, your self inflicted 'drought' becomes a piece of cake.

Thanks MikeG, Clare85, FireStarter0 and others.
Ok, I won't spam the hell out of this forum, just keep updating this thread every so often. I'm not great at asking individual's to donate so I have come up with a plan to go for Sheffield Businesses, by offering something in return for a small (£50ish) donation, more on that in the next week or so.
I am enjoying my last drink tonite for 12 months when my wife gets home from my daughters drama class.
A few have offered in principle to join me, so if anyone is serious, now is time to formalise things. Mail me at shaun@spiracyworld.co.uk if you are interested and I'll add you to the list of people doing this.
I have my wife and a few close friends acting as narks, and they WILL dob me in! At least i'll not come on here ranting in a drunken rage again for at least 12 months though eh?
Anyone on Owlstalk will have seen me write something very similar to the above tonite, as that's the only other forum I am really active on in this country.
Thanks again to everyone, and hopefully this will be a good year.
