Thought I was about fifteen, but 1963 would make me 17. My mate and I liked (sad) Helen Shapiro and bought two tickets to see her at the City Hall. Unfortunately we had to listen to this warm up band first. We just wanted to see Helen and sat uninterested whilst they noisily played their set. And I can say I was glad when they had finished all that banging and shouting and at last Helen came on stage.
It was only last year after a bit of research I discovered the noisy band was in fact, The Beatles. sigh!

Didn't see the Beatles but did see Jimi Hendrix in 1967 when I was 16. Saw Helen Shapiro about 6 years ago (or maybe more) at Solid Silver Sixties concert in City Hall. When she did all her old records she was great but she's a born again christian and started preaching at us and singing hymns. Put me off going to see her again as I'm an atheist and don't appreciate this at a Sixties concert

I think if I were a Xtian it would put me off, as I had paid to watch an international recording artist, not attend a church service which you can do for free on a Sunday.

Talking of opening acts I went to see Eric Clapton at the City Hall in the old days. Not to see Eric Clapton mind, who I have always thought is massively over-rated, but his opening act, the legendary Muddy Waters.

Anyway although the gig was sold out there couldn't have been more than 50 people in the hall when Muddy was playing and even my mate who had come with me was in the bar with everyone else. I went to fetch him out of there and overheard one bloke saying to another, "So who's the support act then?" "Dunno", his mate said, "Just some old black bloke, playing blues songs on a guitar!"
