Legal aid cuts - Sheffield says no! (public meeting on Friday 3rd June)

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

I want to tell you about an event I am organising to challenge the government's proposals to cut legal aid. Some info is pasted below.

These cuts are coming very soon and will take major areas of law out of reach for free help including debt, benefits, employment, education, some housing and family contact cases. The proposals will also slice eligibility. The legal aid minister said he knows that poor people will be affected - but that hasnt moved him. The bare minimum of people would qualify for help under the government's plans. Anyone with a home will probably be ineligible.

So many people in Sheffield will be affected by this. If you can help with our event, attend, speak, want a poster - then please get in touch. Please do spread the word and come if you can.

Thank you!

carita

SHEFFIELD STANDS UP FOR JUSTICE!

Public Meeting - Friday 3rd June 2011 5-6 pm, outside Sheffield Town Hall

Do you believe everyone should be treated fairly under the law - no matter who they are, where they live or how much money they have?

Cuts to legal aid and funding for advice services will stop people getting the help they need to protect their rights.

Justice for All is a group campaigning against the cuts. They are organising a national day of action to show we still say no! We want to make some noise here in Sheffield to show the government and the council what these cuts mean for people in our city. We will have a meeting outside the Town Hall with speakers from the local area including Jillian Creasy (Green Party councillor) and others from the advice sector.

When? Friday 3rd June 2011 at 5 pm

Where? Outside Sheffield Town Hall (town centre)

What else? Bring your friends, and a banner to show your group was there. And spread the word.... let's make them take notice of Sheffield!

For more info: Contact Carita at [email protected]

Hope to see you there.

Why should you believe in Justice for all?

§ We value justice for all because community legal and advice services help the most vulnerable in a community get treated fairly.

§ We value justice for all because the right advice early on can save £10 for every £1 invested & keep families together in their homes, & in

work & education.

§ We want justice for all, yet demand for advice is outstripping supply.

§ We want justice for all, yet it is becoming increasingly difficult to get expert advice and representation.

To achieve Justice for all:

§ We need advisers to be free to advise on any problem, where and when they are needed.

§ We need adequate levels of government spending on legal aid and advice, but spent on services not on wasteful systems.

A massive shake up in which way?

They cut all the trivial topics like PI and consumer stuff years ago....

Why shouldn't someone with little money get justice in a family matter, employment or crime matter anymore???

Because the only people that win are solicitors.

Do you actually know what legal aid rates are before you make that allegation?

im sorry but in my view legal aid is mainly used by women using their children as weapons against their ex's and illegal immigrants to stay for a few more precious years on state hand outs.

at present legal aid is unfit for purpose. it needs a shakeup.

you are so frikken wrong it's untrue - legal aid allows people to obtain invaluable advice that allows them to stay in their homes, secure benefits they are entitled to 'BECAUSE THE LAW SAYS SO', help with debt issues and any disputes with employers; legal aid does not just fund divorce cases.

If you had an accident and had your leg amputated are you not going to try and claim mobility?

Or if your son/daughter/friend was about to be evicted because her landlord was an arse or they had failed to keep up with rent/mortgage because they had got made redundant do you not think they should be able to access advice or help ?

Please think about what you are saying

Legal Aid costs could easily be cut.

Stop Legal Aid for ALL Human Rights and Immigration cases and save taxpayers thousands if not millions of Pounds.

Now wait for the hysterical rants from the Liberal Left and the legal profession.

Again, you really have no idea what legal aid rates are clearly!

We (the legal profession) won't object or rant hysterically at all. LA charge out rates are very, very low compared to private rates! Look into these things before you make these claims, please.

Here we go. As I expected.

Moosey

You are correct, I do not know the Legal Aid rates. But I know ridiculous, trivial Human Rights and long drawn out Immigration cases are costing us vast amounts of money, encouraged by the legal profession, which we cannot afford.
