Sorry to have a rant but want to ask are bus users ignorant and selfish?I got on the 88 bus from the wicker to Fir vale which is approx 4 stops with my 4 year old after collecting her from nursery.
The double decker initially looked full on the down stairs section. The first part of the bus was occupied by a mother and her child in a pram ( fair enough) the opposite drop down seats were ocupied by a middle aged woman who sat on the middle seat and had a leg on the other seat. I dropped the last folding seat and sat my child on it and I myself stood.
At the next stop because the woman instisted next to my child insisted on occupying two of the drop down seats, a mother with a pram was unable to get on the bus.
At the third stop another mother with a pram was about to be refused to get on but I intervened to say that we could make space if the woman who was occupying to seats gave up a seat. The mother was allowed on and the woman who had occupied the two seats shifted to another part of the bus.
At the next stop an old woman who was having dificulty in getting on the bus had to stand because of lack of seating. I was appalled so hoisted my young one up onto my shoulders for the last leg of my journey and gave up her seat so the old woman could sit.
I though the many able and young people would have given up their seat but no they sat firm.
Is it just me or have manners disappeared?

They did didn't they, your daughter gave up her seat so I don't see the problem. Sounds to me like you have the attitude of everyone else on the bus and that's where the problem lies....
"Someone on here should give their seat up, but I'm not", only takes everyone on the bus to make that split second calculation and the result is that no one moves.
Good on your little one for having some manners though.

Good on you. You've probably made someones day.
One thing I will say though, is that I am disabled, but unless you don't know me, you probably wouldn't know it. I have had some funny looks when I haven't got up and moved for an old person before, when I probably need the seat more than them.

I a young and able person will always give up my seat for someone in need however i have found especially on the tram that older people assume you should give up your seat and i dont mean elderly people i mean people only 20 years older than me (in their 30's) . Also when people feel the need to stand in the door of the tram when there are plenty of seats and fail to allow you past. Also older people on the bus i get on are very ignorant as they feel because they are old they should get on first even though i have been stood there politly waiting to get on for 20 minutes. Sorry for the rant but i completly understand you complaint about ignorant people on buses

I have a similar problem when I use the tram with my friend who is severely disabled and a wheelchair user. I have had many an argument with women (never men though) who refuse to move their pram's so my friend can use the wheelchair spaces on the trams.
That said, most of the population manage to be very considerate, must be something about women with prams...

They also tend to be ignorant in shops and meadowhall when they run into you expecting you to move or just stop in the middle of the walk way

I don't think so, Ive not been out with her for a while because we've both been ill!
Sounds like typical behaviour though!

In my opinion a young child shouldn't have to stand up on the bus I think it is unsafe for them to do so. Could you imagine how far they would be flung if the bus stopped suddenly? Also if they fell it is likely they would be trodden on by other people that were standing if they fell.
If they need to give up their seat it should be to sit on the knee of their parent/carer at the time!

I am slightly confused so the ladies child had to give up her seat.... if so it is a disgrace by everyone on the bus as people dont account for people the height of a small child when moving on buses

I think the same. The times I have let a lil un sit in my seat on the bus during busy periods I cannot count on my fingers.

Having not used public transport for several years, I was shocked to see on recent tram journeys, young people (most likely students, they all get off at sheffield college) seem to have no problem at all in allowing elderly passengers stand during the journey. Whatever happened to manners?

Ahhhhh, I do apologise and fully agree with what the others have said above me, I somehow saw the 1 in front of the 4 that isn't really there , as a father of a 4 year old girl myself and having to sometimes use the buses there is no way I'd let her stand on a bus journey when teens and able bodied adults are sat, espescially with the way most drivers brake and fly around bends, she'd be killed in minutes.
I don't fully agree with the student part that someone else mentioned though, although I am an avid hater of most students, I do tend to find that the girls will very often offer up their seat for my daughter, although lads have never done it.
Sorry OP

I really hate the trams, and the seeming no limits on prams, wheelchairs, and other standing travellers. No matter if there are 6 prams and a wheelchair on the already full tram, blocking the doors, they will lets more and more on.

Yeah, I've experience this several times...I always give mine up as well and politely let the pensioner / disabled person know so they don't miss it, and on several occasions have just been blanked like I didn't exist.
I do love the pensioners though that walk around with a fixed smile all day and are always happy, it's the old gits that have problems with anything and everything that bug me...miserable old gits.

I was once on the bus with my pram, and an old woman was sat in the pram area with me, talking to my daughter, seemed very nice, even gave her a sweet. Another pram got on, and asked if I could move mine slightly to the side for her to get past. The old woman went into outrage and started swearing at her! Her pram was a lot bigger than mine, mine being a small buggy, and so, it crossed over into the aisle when parked up. The old woman was going mad about this, saying she would trip with her walking stick if she didn't get her pram behind the line, before she got off the bus. I was shocked to say the least.

Im only in my teens and to look at me, you would think there is nothing wrong with me, but in matter of fact i probably need the seat more than half of the eldery that give you dirty looks and tut at you if you dont move for them, I don't think its fair people slagging off teenagers and students because truth be told some OAP's are worse!! I agree with a post made earlier, the elderly seem to think even if someones been waiting for a bus a lot longer than they have that they still have the right to push to the front!
