I have searched through Ravelry, my own patterns and various sights on the net. Does anyone know of any free top down patterns for premature baby cardigans. Come now, don't be afraid to suggest. If it's one I've already seen, I will politely ignore you I've looked at most of the premature baby knitting sights, but could always have missed one If nothing comes of this request, I may have to start improvising and that might not be a pretty sight

I've loads of prem baby patterns but never seen any knitted top down. Just out of interest what's the benefit of doing them this way?

There are 32 free knitted prem cardigans, but I've only taken a liking to three so far. I like the idea of top down as there isn't much picking up or sewing up.

It seems (I could be wrong) that you start and the neck and increase, increase, increase until you have enough stitches for the fronts, back and sleeves, then do the separate bits and bob's your aunty's uncle!

I used to do at least 1 baby cardigan a day, but have struggled over the last couple of years trying to get 1 finished

If you're looking for top down preemie patterns try knittingpatterncentral
free-knitpatterns

We've got a couple in our file so if you email our group at
knitandnatterblc@yahoo.co.uk we can send them to you but we have to say that the patterns are purely for charitable use and not for sale

Hope this helps - happy knitting!

I've got one for a kimono style wrap around - there's a picture here but the link to the pattern isn't working.
It's top down with no sewing up, very easy!
I think it's got a size for preemie. I'll look it out when I get home.

Here's a pattern I recently came across, hope it helps

1 pair 3.25m needles (Old size 10)
1 set of 4 Double Pointed needles 3.25 mm
Less than 50 grams 4 ply baby wool
Finished size 15"-16" ( fits 51/2lb to 7lb baby)
Contrast wool to hold stitches and make markers
Abbreviations
MS Moss Stitch (Knit 1, Purl 1)next row (Purl 1, Knit 1)
PM Place marker (loop of contrast wool)

Main Part

Cast on 58 stitches
Work 3 rows in K1 P1 rib
**{{On the 4th and following 18th rows, make buttonholes on left or right, depending on whether cardi is wanted for boy or girl, till you have 4 buttonholes}}**
Work 2 more rows in K1 P1 rib.

Place markers as follows

1. Moss stitch 5, K9, Place marker, K6 PM, K18 PM, K6 PM, K9 MS 5
2. Moss stitch 5, purl across (passing markers to other needle) to last 5, MS 5
3. (Increase row) MS 5, knit across BUT increase in the stitches before and after each marker, to last 5, MS 5 {(to make increases without producing holes, knit into BACK then FRONT of each increase stitch)} (64 sts)
4. MS 5, purl across to last 5 Sts, MS 5

Repeat rows 3 and 4 (increasing 8 stitches every increase row) until you have 178 stitches arranged as follows.. 29 // 36 // 48 // 36 // 29

Next Row, dividing for sleeves
MS 5, Knit 60 (Take a length of contrast wool, and slip the last 36 Sts knitted onto it) Knit 84, (Slip last 36 Sts knitted onto another length of contrast wool) Knit to last 5 Sts MS5 (106 Sts) (and 36 Sts on each length of contrast)
MS 5, purl to last 5sts, MS 5

Keeping the 5st MS borders, work 18 rows stocking stitch (remembering button holes as before)

Next Row - decreasing for welt.
MS 5, k2, (K2tog K3) to last 5 Sts, MS 5
MS 5, purl across to last 5 Sts, MS 5

Work 8 rows in K1 P1 rib, pacing 5th buttonhole half way down bottom rib.
Cast off

Sleeves

Pick up 36 Sts from contrast yarn, and place 12 on each of 3 DP needles.
KNIT for 18 rounds.

Next round - decrease for cuff
Decrease 8 Sts evenly across next round (28 Sts)

Work 8 rows K1 P1 rib, and cast off.

Using the tail of yarn, close each under arm gap.

Add buttons.
