Ive noticed recently some people saying things such as "such and such is only trying to up their post count"

Do some people actually do that? Ive seen a couple of people who will start things like event topics, who i think are doing it more for attention / post count than to actually organise a night out but i never thought it was so deep rooted!

If you do, why do you do it?
Is it some kind of status symbol?
Do you think you are "cooler" or "geekier" for doing it?
Are YOU proud of your post count?

Answers on a post card please!

Not long ago, I posted a thread celebrating the fact that I had reached a milestone of 1800 logged posts.

The thread was pulled, as I understand it, because it would "encourage posting for the sake of it" to bump post counts.

But thats what i'm asking; why did you feel the need to 'celebrate' 1800 posts? its not even a good number, e.g 2000 or 5000 etc... really is it?

I just dont understand the big deal is?

It seems in many cases to be a case of 'the higher the post count, the larger the genitalia'. Nonsense, naturally.

Although I don't think that 'rule' applies to this forum. There are some others I use where some posters have 30,000 posts and they're absolutely full of... errr... hot air.

I think they should hide post counts, because it encourages some members to post for the sake of it and I think this leads to poor quality postings.

And I think it would also be a good idea for members to be resticted to 4 posts an hour or some such figure, because to post a hundred times a day is likely to lead to a very unhealthy obsession. Evidence of which is all around the sheffield forum

Oops, sorry, got a bit wound up there for a second!

There isnt a big deal with post counts. I only post so much because I lead a very boring life and have got nothing else to do

I never ever post just for the sake of it, although I do joke about the post count sometimes, though Im not really bothered in reality.

My average post count in my profile shows 7 posts a day. I don't think that that is all that obsessive. Although like many I have found that at times I have spent rather too long on the sheffield forum when I could have been doing something much more important.
I am perfectly serious about my views in this thread, not winding anyone up.

4 posts an hour???? thats hardly going to stimulate debate is it!!!

But i agree with your comments about post counts - i have been on boards where the people with big post counts used to take the mikey out of people with smaller ones and say that there opinion is not as valid as they are a "newbie" - post counts should be in peoples profiles- but not on the page where u see there comments!!

Maybe if people kept count of how many of their post's had been removed or how times they had been banned it would be more interesting

So long as my actual posts stay... I couldn't give a rats if my post count went all together.

Means nothing to me.
