Did anyone else see it on the grass verge last night about 6.10? I was shocked as thought it was a huge crow at first! It flew into the road and stopped traffic at one point. Not sure what bird it was though!

I see it quite regulary. It hovers and hunts in the long grass at the side of the hill. I've not had long enough to have a proper look at it as I'm always driving so not worked out what it is yet!
There is some sort of hawk that kills pigeons in the woods nearby so I'm guessing it is some sort of sparrow hawk?

Sparrowhawks are quite small, are they not?
The crows at NGH are definitely bigger, I'm sure!
(I could be wrong, but google images is quite useful)

Yes they are small.
I have seen it fly up a few times when walking the dog, when we have disturbed it feeding, but it is very fast, so never really get a good feeling for it's size. I just presumed it is the same bird that hovers on east bank road as it is very close
It just pecks out the liver area of the bird and leaves the rest!

.. Ew. I'm not a huge fan of liver, myself!
You could be right, it could well be a sparrowhawk.
Hmm.. Maybe I will try creeping out with my camera at some point!

Any bird of prey flying into a road and stopping traffic, sounds to me like a escaped captive bird.

If it stoped the traffic it may have been a pelican crossing

I saw a bloody big bird tonight after detouring due to an accident. It was just off Staniforth Road, near the park near the fire station. Was thinking of taking my camera and zoom lense out, but its near a park lol people may get the wrong idea lol I have no idea what it was, it made me stop and look though. Ended up in some conifer trees on the far side

For the last two days a pair of buzzards has been circling the skies above Southey Green and Shiregreen, they are huge.
Watched them for an hour this evening and they were flying higher than I have ever seen birds fly but at one point one of them dropped down to within about fifty feet of our house.
