Hi everyone,
I experienced improvemnt in (XP) system performance with defragging ( the lags during file access and boot seem to have vanished ) and i do it regularly now along with other maintenance tasks. What are the things you do as regular maintenance and does it include defrag? How often?

Welcome to SF, Goldie....if you do a search, you will probably find several threads about system maintenance. Just so you know, it always pays to do a search before posting new threads on SF

Running disk cleanup cleans up old files, I run that once a fortnight or so, aside from that removing old programs you don't use and keeping an eye on disk space

vidster... deleting files does not improve performance
it's not the amount of files on your hard-drive that causes problems but the way they are arranged... de-fragging sorts this

cut and paste them into a different folder
if there are no problems, you can delete them.... if there are, just pop them back

I've just got a Netgear SC101 mirrored RAID array. It uses a different filing system than a PC does on the hard drive, and as such it never needs defragging however many files I move on and off it
Of course I still have to defrag my hard drive in laptop once in a while but not as often as used to.

I thought computers were clever. why do I have to keep it tidy. It should be self cleaning, like my oven.
I took my hoover apart and fixed it fine. PC's I don't have a clue!

if you have too many files windows has more to look through
i was always taught to only install what you might need rather than everything
and to delete tmp files and bak files etc
also having too many fonts slows the computer down too
