Hello

A friend of mine from London is visiting Sheffield for work. He has to book a hotel but the budget means he's limited to Travel Lodge, Ibis or Premier Inn (the city centre ones, he doesn't want to be at Meadowhall).

Has anyone used any of these hotels and which would you recommend?

Thanks for reading

I've had out of town guests stay at all three and Travelodge won hands down.

I have to disagree. Whilst working away we were always booked in Travel Lodge due to cost and they were very basic but ok. Occasionally our office could not get a room in a local Travel Lodge and 'splashed out' the extra tenner (or so) and put us in a Premier Inn, I always found these much plusher (not 5 star but definitely much nicer). I found this the case all over the country and Sheffield is very much the same, in my opinion.
Never stayed in an Ibis but the entrance and public areas of Sheffield's look perfectly acceptable

Is the one at the bottom of the Moor a Premier Inn? Some friends stayed there at New Year and it was very comfortable, nicely fitted out and convenient both for City Centre, Eccy Rd and London Road. All within easy walking distance for the averagely fit person. Parking on site for residents and plenty of on street spacein the evening for visitors if necessary.

Wasn't overpriced either, iirc.

Get the Ibis on scene one of the worse placed hotels in England lol.
As you come out you get offered some cheap lynx and cheap fags.

Premier Inn always seem much better than Travelodge to me, even the new(ish) one on Barrow Rd seems dated.

No experience of the Sheffield ones, but have stayed in many Premier Inns
and Travelodges nationwide through work, and Premier Inns far superior imho

Got to agree. Stayed in here last year and it was awful. The bed was rock hard, there was no towels. The wife had to get dried on the hand towel after a shower and i used the mat off the floor. Also there was no hair drier or tea and coffee in the room. Not worth the £50 they charge per night.

Did you complain?

I complained at the Premier Inn Meadowhall about being in a room over the kitchen, got my money back.

You asked for towels and they couldn't provide any? That's bad, I've never stayed anywhere where they didn't have towels. Or did they stipulate you bring your own on the booking form and you missed it?

Premier Inn on St Marys Gate (bottom of the Moor) is really comfortable and great value. I would recommend it.

That's the one I meant in my post above. Didn't know what the road was called these days

Thanks for your comments everyone. He's booked the Premier Inn (St Mary's Gate) - partly because it's near where he needs to be, partly because of your comments and partly because he managed to get his room for £29.99 a night as a special offer.

I've never used any of the Sheffield ones, but my experiences elsewhere have been similar to those on this thread, namely that Premier Inn is slightly superior to Travelodge.

The Premier Inn @ St Marys Gate is a long way better then any of the alternatives mentioned above, best value by a long way.
Its been declared one of the cleanest hotel in South Yorkshire and one of the housekeepers hold the World record for fastest bed made!!!

Premier Inn any time anywhere. Mind you The Garrison Hotel in Hillsborough is very good. We stay there everytime we visit Sheffield. We were there last week and had a double room with breakfast for £55 a night. I don't know how that compares to "budget" hotels.

Also The Garrison is on the supertram route which is an added bonus to my mind. It is a pity that the surrounding area does look a bit run down with it's closed up shops.

I stayed in a Travelodge in London a couple of weeks ago - I was going out and the T/L was cheaper than a taxi home, plus it was near the station and I had to get an early train.

All I will say is "never again". It was cheap but very basic. I'm sure they have their target market but I'm far too old to be slumming it now! Premier Inn do seem much better in comparison, and for not much more money.

I've found Travelodge to be very variable. Some are very clean and have huge rooms, but some really are dingy and filthy. The London ones are particularly bad offenders. Premier Inns are definitely superior and I opt for them when I have a choice (i.e. when the nearest PI isn't £120!).
